    Offensive??

:deaf:Anything less than 90 decible loss is considered HOH, 90+ loss is considered deaf. Culturally Deaf means those who communicate almost exclusivley with ASL. I am an RN and deaf -I find the term "hearing impaired" to be offensive and never classify myself or others as such. I am deaf not...

    Adjustment to late onset deafness

I know exactly what you mean. There are a couple of fairly new nurses that I am currently working with that seem to have changed their perspective about me since learning about my deafness. I have been told I'm too shy, then in the next breath, I'm too aggressive. I have been told I had no...

details Ok, so that you all know...the exact details (minus real names) are as follows...I was working. A new doctor that I had not met yet walked in. People who say "What, What?" to deaf person

I have a question for everyone. What is your opinion of hearing people who tell deaf people "What, what, what?" thinking it's a funny thing to do? Do you think it's funny? Or do you find it rude and insensitive? I find that attitude in several of my co-workers (these people know I am deaf but...

When hearie person said to you something and didn't know you're Ddeaf/Hhoh....

Funny, everyone hates that phrase "nevermind". I do too. One day I got fed up with too many coworkers doing that to me so I turned the tables. When I said something, and they weren't activly listening, they would look at me and say "what did you say?" I told them Nevermind, it's not important...

    newly deaf and struggling

Welcome. You are in an amzing position to be informative about hearing loss and deafness. By informing your students, they will not have that ignorance and will then in turn instruct others about deafness. I understand how you feel. I am an RN who works in the OR and get a ton of rude looks and...

My friend is convinced ASL isn't a language and there is no such thing as...

There are some people who just refuse to learn anything and demand to stay ignorant...why waste your time on him? You did what you could to inform him. Like the saying, "you can lead a horse to water but can't make him drink."
