    who has a fluctating loss?

I have a fluctuating loss, but I also have a permanent hearing loss. My hearing fluctuates due to a neurovascular disorder. Sometimes, blood vessels in my brain constricts and cut off blood flow to different parts of my brain, including the auditory nerve. My hearing decreases when this happens...

Who here has a signal/hearing dog?

This information is 100% incorrect in the United States. In the US there is NO governing body certifying or regulating service dogs. In order to have a service dog, you must meet the legal definition of "disabled" and the dog must be individually trained to mitigate your disability in a way that...

How would people feel about strangers

If the dog is crying when you are leaving it alone, I question the temperament and stability of the dog and whether or not it should be working in public. Was this a dog that was obtained through an agency? If not, who helped you with the dog's public access training? Just because the dog...

Should Dogs Go Everywhere With You?

I agree that only trained service dogs should be allowed in places of public where pets are not normally permitted. It takes a dog of a very specific temperament and high level of skilled training in order to be worked as a successful service dog. The person with the dog must meet the legal...

Has anyone else had issues with captioning and paying attention?

I use CART too. I get a copy of the transcript and I get the notes from the teacher. There's no reason why you should be missing material because you need accommodations. Do you have memos (504's) from the disability office? What do you mean by the university doesn't provide notetakers? It...

    ASL slang and brand names?

I sign "Starbucks" with only one hand at the ear (flick 8). Many people here sign it that way.

    Anyone got blackberry curve?

I have a Curve (8320 so it's older). I love it and it has held up fine for me, but I am looking to replace with the 9700 (so cool!).

    Claustrophobic during hearing test

I can definitely sympathize. I have the same problem. I end up in a full blown panic attack and they can't get an accurate audiogram on me. For this reason, I avoid audiograms. In the past, they have tried a couple things, including: putting me in the child room (a bit bigger, less scary)...

    ASL student attending Deaf event

It's not possible to speak English and sign grammatically correct ASL at the same time. If you MUST speak, gloss it. But honestly, try and keep your voice off for a couple of hours, it won't kill you and you can talk to your friends about it all you want after the event is finished...

    Teleseminar with relay

Can I use relay (My IP Relay or Sorenson IP) to participate in a teleseminar? I am supposed to participate in a teleseminar tonight about service dogs and access laws. I'd like to be able to understand everything.

    Help with VRS please

Thanks everyone. The internet I have now is called "Rocket Broadband" it is through satellite. What happens is it will start off with a strong connection and slowly die. I sent a message to my landlord asking about cable service, but it looks like Verizon may be the only way to get it to...

    Help with VRS please

The local cable provider does not offer service in the apartment complex. It sounds like Verizon is the only option through DSL. Thank you for the information about the satellite.

    Help with VRS please

Sorenson came over to hook up the video phone for me and discovered that our internet connection is not fast enough for the video phone to work properly. The interpreter is unable to see me clearly to understand what I'm signing. Sorenson said to switch to Verizon to get a faster connection...

What does T Mobile think of YOU?

Ummm, yes it does. Not having access to the chat has to do with T Mobile. Being told to get your own terp and go down to a store has to do with T Mobile too.

Doctors appointments - for "female things"

I could see it going both ways. My doctor explains everything before hand and then gives me hand signals. If you're concerned about communication, ask the terp to stay. It should be a female terp and they should be position so their back is to the doctor and they are right in front of your...

Dumb access denial excuses for your service dog

Yes and no. The business may ask what TASKS the dog has been trained to do to mitigate your disability. Note that comfort and companionship are not tasks. The business may not ask for a demonstration, nor they can require proof of the training, ask what your disability is or ask for proof of...
