    'Hearie' and 'Deafie'...offensive??

Oh okay, I didn't know that. Due to the lack of captions I've only seen one episode with a few deaf people in it on TV. Sorry for the OT! I asked my husband about the Hearie and Deafie thing. He said he wouldn't be bothered and considered it strange for hearing people get offended by it...

Dating after deafness... Is it possible?!

You're welcome! Too bad if there aren't that many deaf people in your area. Have you checked for bigger events? Maybe a bit away, but usually always worth the drive. Teaching yourself a language is hard, I'm trying the exact same thing right now.

    'Hearie' and 'Deafie'...offensive??

Taub means deaf, but it also means numb. (I thought about it, there really is no other word for numb)

Is that question really offend you?

That question doesn't offend me, but sometimes I wonder how people throw it at someone, like making a statement, not waiting for the answer, etc. Meeting new people I do ask this question, but I just ask if they are deaf. Yes, then I sign at a normal speed (well for me a normal speed). If the...

Stick with your own kind? or Mix it up!

I really would go for the mix. Well, I have, I married a bavarian guy. But as long as I can bond to someone I wouldn't care where he is from.

Dating after deafness... Is it possible?!

Be glad, that he didn't take you anywhere else. Well about your accent, there are many guys out there who are attracted by a deaf accent. So in this case, I would be glad, that it probably scared him away. He was just a waste of time and not worth it! You know being deaf is an advantage in some...

    I know it seems odd...

I know exactly what you are talking about. Don't have twins, but the screaming at the top of her lungs for fun, yes, that is someting familiar. If it gets too much I just take my HAs out. That works best so far.

    How do you handle...

That's the thing with family. I know, they mean well. Still, it feels weird. That is one of those points in life when I realize that they are ok with my deafness but not they way I am okay with it. It is more like they accept it because they can't change it, but still wouldn't wish for it. I...

Hearing people who are attracted to deaf people

You know what. This just made me remember an ex-not-really-boyfriend of mine. When we met, he was really sweet and nice. We hang out quite a lot and I really had a good time. But then it got really weird. He started to complain about not being able to call me. Well, he could call me, but it...

Dating after deafness... Is it possible?!

And you have all right to do that! You know the really sad part about it...I can't say that I'm shocked, because I experienced some of these things myself and heard too many stories that go like yours. It is just sad, that there are still so many morons out there. Too bad you didn't get a...

    'Hearie' and 'Deafie'...offensive??

I have no problem with those terms, but I don't always use them in case someone doesn't know the meaning and might be offended. Oh, I forgot to mention: In Germany we don't have short terms for either. Sad thing is, most hearing people still use deaf mute, they never heard of the other word...

ASL Students: Be honest, your reason???

I speak English, I speak German. I sign German, some Austrian Sign Language I know, too. ASL is just the next step. I prefer signing over lipreading and missing a lot. Yet, I really have a lot of work ahead of me until I can say that I know that language. Sometimes it is just kind of strange. I...

:ty: That really helped! I will keep that in mind.

Hi, I'm Elaine. I'm hearing. I'm learning ASL.

Hi, that sounds great. Have fun! Try to become involved with the deaf community. Look around for events in your area and just make new friends.

    One Hearing Aid, or Two?

What works best for me: Sign to those people. Usually they get that I'm Deaf after that. Doesn't help with their stupidity, though.

How did ASL grammar and English grammer get to be so different in the USA?

Yes, there is. German sign language has more in common with ASL then German. In Germany and Austria you speak the same language but the sign languages are totally different from one another, except the grammar.
