From what I understand, it's now mostly an Early Childhood School. Mostly preschool, kindergarten with a very small handful in the grades (and its mostly grades 1,2 and 3.) But I think that's the way it is for almost ALL oral deaf schools..... they're now early childhood schools.

Hearing aids have slimmed down a lot since you were a kid. That said, they really aren't as noticable as you'd think. I have a purple aid and NOBODY really notices it.

Oh forgot to add. Jillo passed away. So have a few others........I'm blanking out on their names .... Botti passed away, and so did someone I can't remember their screen name..... but she was from Virginia, was into nerdy stuff, went to VSDB and MSSD in the 80's. Found out she had early onset...

Wow. I'm impressed..... HAs and CIs are pushed BIG time with pediatric losses. I totally agree that everyone is different with liking auditory input, and I say that as someone who loves their aids.....

That's one case, There's a lot of raised oral people who have very poor writing,,,,and as a matter of fact, most people who have literacy issues are HEARING. I know about Cued Speech, but did you know that back when Cued Speech was invented the educational approach at deaf schools was ORAL? ASL...

LOL, I know. There are late deaf people who love them, but it also seems like there's a big population that isn't exactly enthusiastic about them

Why? It's not used. It would be like demanding every hearing student learn Hooked on Phonics

Know what I find odd? Ex hearing/late deafened people can say hearing aids are ehhhh for them, but we Deafies have to LOVE them.

Show us NO BIASED research saying it's better. Yes, it's better then blocking the mouth. It might be a piece of the puzzle to get dhh kids using Phonetics. But, if it is the ANSWER then how come it is not used as a tool in public schools for hearing children to learn to read?

BAHA is awesome, but yes it's expensive and not always covered by insurance. I would get her evaluated at a deaf school just to make sure she IS thriving......Sign may be useful as a second language. Aiding unilatertal loss is still kind of new....in fact until recently it wasn't that unusual...

On the other hand, you will have an advantage seeing as you had a progressive loss. It IS nerve wracking to read the scary stories....and it's good that you realize that the effectiveness of CI varies HUGELY all across the board. BUT, having had progressive loss really does give you a huge...

Also if you see HOH people in the Deaf community, there's no reason why babies with CI won't grativate to the Deaf community. A CI CANNOT and does not allow for assimulation into the hearing world. That's just cruel to imply that.

Actually no..... The effectiveness of CI is ALL over the place. Even if a baby is implanted early, they still won't automaticly be a superstar. You do know that when they claim that CI is "better" then HA, they can use "Oh it's 30% "better" as "evidence" that this or that is "better" 30% is...

I have a HUGE grin on my face. I do think that with more severe nereological issues, it's a good idea to look into everything to see if there may be treatment or whatever.....It may help her be boosted up a little.....You might also request for her to be screened for rare disorders that can...

Glad she's in a special class. Glad too that you tried mainstreaming........I think parents of special needs kids need to explore all the options and possibilties. I also think that inclusion works better when the kid is more " grey area" special needs. (ie they may be strongly academic) And...
