Yes, I know what TTY is. Most of my deaf culture and ASL education has been via older videos and books from the 80s and 90s so I was familiar with TTY but not so much with VRS. One scene in Switched At Birth was the first time I'd seen a videophone, so I was wondering if it's a new thing or if...

Is it OK for an ASL teacher to be Hearing?

My ASL teacher is hearing, but the entire class is in ASL...no English allowed once class has begun. She's been teaching for 17 years and may as well have been speaking ASL since the day she was born. :P

    Interpreters Lack of

Going on my memory... Level 1-ASL students such as myself. Really not qualified to interpret anything. :) Level 2-20% I think? Considered qualified to work in education with young children...bad idea btw. Level 3-40% or 60% Level 4-85% Level 5-95% Must be a level 5 to interpret in hospitals...

    Interpreters Lack of

Oops, sorry! Yes, Joplin is in MO. There was an EF-5 tornado here in 2011...largest and most devastating since 1947. I forgot to mention...of those 50 or so deaf people that my ASL teacher said lived here, that was before the tornado. She said that some have moved away because they couldn't...

    Interpreters Lack of

My ASL teacher was talking about interpreters in class this week and mentioned that there are approximately 50 deaf people in Joplin, but only 2 level 5 (95% accuracy) interpreters qualified to interpret for doctors appointments, etc. one of those interpreters is my very busy teacher and the...

    Sorenson Communications

I had the opportunity to visit one of Sorenson Communications relay centers with my ASL class last week. It was very interesting, we got a tour and info about the company and what they do, (interpret for deaf and HOH over the phone) and attended one of their regular CEUs (Continuing Education...

So annoyed about that deaf chat room

BTW, the link is: alldeafhangout - Tinychat It is easy to broadcast via webcam or type, whichever you prefer. I would love to be able to get a group going and practice my ASL as I'm learning. :) Planning to be on this Sunday.

So annoyed about that deaf chat room

Probably just some weirdo then who thought it would be fun to ban people. Don't worry about it. Moderator changes every time. I was part of another TinyChat group once and we had strangers not in the group come in and spam or cause trouble...or people not mature enough to moderate signing in...

So annoyed about that deaf chat room

That's weird.... Whoever gets on first is the Mod, so if it's empty when you arrive...that's you. :) I used to check all the time to see if anyone was on, but I've quit doing that and now I just try to sign in every Sunday evening, around 7:00 CST. Usually empty, but I figure "If you build it...

    Mistaken for deaf

LOL! Poor kid didn't drink enough water or something. He was like 5 at the time.

    Mistaken for deaf

I once took my little brother to the public bathroom at a campsite. He was constipated so we were in there for a while and this group of college guys (the same guys that had kept us all awake half the night with their carousing around) congregated around the door, banging on it every 2 seconds...

    Mistaken for deaf

....and I was talking about minorities in general....you can't take a general statement and apply it to an individual and then conclude that because the statement does not fit that person/persons therefore the statement is false. My minority member friends don't think they're victims either. :)

    Mistaken for deaf

I believe I am the person being referred to here. :) I am hearing (well, for the most part, still need to get a hearing test done and find out what's going on) and I don't understand what it's like to be deaf. I don't claim to understand. My post was about minorities in general and although I...
