I always just ask if they'd talk a little slower and face me. It tends to work. When they don't get it the first time, I wave at them, look them square in the eye and say, "I need to read your lips." If I still can't catch on to what they said, I tell them what I know they said and ask them to...

Just thought I'd impart that, yes, there are treatments for hypersensitivities. They are about the same as treatments for the opposite: limited exposure.
