    Question about ASL & SEE

To answer the question on SEE, me personally, I wouldn't bother teaching that. I am only a student of deaf studies and from what I am told it doesn't make it any easier to learn english. Also, as a late deafened person that was exposed to SEE and ASL (asl later and see first), I was a lot more...

    My kid doesn't sign back

Did anyone ever answer the real question as to how do you deal with your child ignoring your sign language when you are trying to sign to him? I am usually quite frustrated. I still refuse to use my voice but then I become like banging on things or stomping or tapping him repeatedly to make him...

    Deaf culture - do's and don'ts, etc. Let's make a list!

I hate it when I am in class, and everytime before a test, suddenly all the hearing people want to know if I can send them a copy of my "notes" (the transcripts for the class session that my typewell captionist has taken). Actually what they do is ask my captionist if they can pay him for a copy...

What Ticks You Off (Most) About Hearies?

Shel90 I am new to this board- I don't know how to pm you or email you or whatever. My info is on my profile, can you maybe get in touch with me? i've been meaning to chat with you ever since my other ci thread where, I think jillio, said we might have lots to talk about.

What Ticks You Off (Most) About Hearies?

Yea, I don't understand if I have more issues with my ci because i was born and lived with perfect hearing for 12 years and I know the difference. I wish I could hear (ya know like a hearing person hears) what the simulators are really like. I imagine they are pretty close, though, as most...

What Ticks You Off (Most) About Hearies?

This is what I wrote to this hearing guy I was dating for a few weeks and then realized it was not working out. (I have a ci). It sums it up nicely for me. "I want to be with someone that wants to communicae with me and will put effort into doing that. I don't always want to have to turn...

    Deaf Culture Paper

I would study the media in general. Just randomly search newspaper and magazine articles and see how many positive vs negative images of Deafness there are.

I didn't want to say anything but......

I am so happy they will replace it for you. Only 2 more days til you get your mini one turned on, but cochlear will probably have sent you the replacement by then. They are really fast and seem to understand what it's like to have your ci missing or inoperable. Continue looking for the other...

    deaf in a hearing job

I've never been deaf in a hearing job, but I love reading your posts. It gives ideas for employment and hopes, and what to expect and it's just nice knowing one day that if/when i am in a "hearing" job that people like yourself will have broken some barriers for me.

    DHH playgroups?

Thanks for the support. I guess I will start the group after my spring semester ends and let you on the message board know about it.

    H/A vs. C/I

I think, in the past, doctors did not want to implant ci's to people that could benefit from HA's(i.e. people that still had residual hearing) because they believed the implant surgery would destroy any remaining residual hearing on that side. So that rather limits the ability to choose a ci...

Tired of "hearing" after 15 years?

HA never worked for me so i can't really say about that. I do understand about the importance of hearing memory with the ci though, and my best guess is that it mainly applies to the ci. With the c.i. I am not HEARING a sound so much as I am RECOGNIZING a sound. As a person that could hear...

    DHH playgroups?

How and where do preschool(age 1-5 especially) dhh children or coda socialize? I want my son to be around and socialize with signing peers, just like hearing children have that opportunity. I have searched and searched though and only just recently found 1 group (it is sponsored by these...

    baby's crying

I bought the alertmaster baby cry system, which as everyone else said, alerts you to cry or, basically any other noise that lasts an extended period. I didn't find it very effective personally, just because of my son's personality. My son likesd to go from a soft cry to a crazy maddening scream...

Tired of "hearing" after 15 years?

Thank you so much for that information! Makes me feel so much less stress about that aspect of turning it off. Even after a few waking hours with it off, I can usually detect the difference in sound quality for like half an hour. And, the longer waking hours with it off, the longer the sound...
