reading the notebook thread, gave me an idea. why not discuss deskstop and show off your stuff and talk..

heres the story. I had this tower that was built in 2005, after ditching a old dell 2002 system, it was pentium 4 3.0GHZ, 1GB ram, it was 80GB HD (finally upgraded to 200GB HD sata when 80GB HD went), radeon 500/600 series video card, intel GAG915 motherboard. (back then it was ideal for a graphic design basic work.... and for a college student, it was given to me with a budget of $500) It was faithful to me until last feb 2008.. It never started up right again and it was going bad on me, it was hopeless to keep it alive... It was sad story because I was broke and needed it bad for my college work... but lucky for me I had my trusty laptop with me to do some work while looking into a brand new deskstop system to build and to fiance since I had started a job, perfect oppunity for me to do so..

so into my research, and finally built a new computer system, heres the new specs,

Soprano DX mid tower,
-Blood Iron Motherboard,
-Core 2 Quad 6600 2.4 GHZ,
-2 GB crucical Technology ram (will soon add another 2GB for my graphic design purposes, will be 4GB Ram.)
Radeon 500/600 series video (using until i can upgrade this to Geforce 8600GT video card, ideal for graphics work.)
-20 inch Dell LCD Screen Monitor ( upgraded when in early feb 2008, my CRT (yes the same CRT i had used for 6 years, died on me this was before the whole tower died on me)
-Two Cd/Dvd Burners, one has lightscribe, other dont.
-OCZ Technology 600Watts Power Supply.

I had to replace my trusty 200GB hd, it even went bad while the old system dying.. it has been upgraded to 500GB Western Digital SE16.

and runs on VISTA ultimate, hence why I am going to add more 2GB ram for more speed for graphic design, and vista eats up 1 GB alone.

all under $800 for the tower itself! It was great upgrade building system for me, and especially I had not upgraded anything since 2005, and especially I am now experienced Graphic designer, and do most of coding CSS and Html.
Most were ordered off newegg, a faithful member since 2001.

For your old system that won't start up. Did you check it's power supply that may have failed and also BIOS battery?? You could take out your new homebuilt system power supply and plug it in to your old system to see if it boots right up. If it did then old system have bad power supply. Worth a try.

Your new Qurad core sytem is NIIICCEE. Curiously, have you ever run it on Linux?? If so, Let me know how it runs.

I checked the old power supply and everything, it wasnt booting up right, it was going on and off every 3 sec, sign of a bad mobo, and everything looked right and cpu kept overheating too, i had new thermal paste and all and no cure. it was just going bad. and it was time to upgrade everything for my work anyway.. . :cool2:

Yes, It does run on ubuntu, 64 bit version, i havent installed yet, but plans to, i tested it with live cd and it is NICE.

Upgrade to GeForce 8800 GT. It's best video card (current) with good reviews. GeForce 9 series cant outpower it yet. I have ordered it (XFX 512 MB) along with new computer parts today.

I may buy another video card to use SLI, DVD burner SATA, and 2 more 1GB memory when it's good time to do it.

yeah, I have been planning to get 8600GT video card for while, just money issues right now, once i have money, i will spring for it. and get 2 more GB ram also.

deathpit, nice, not bad.

On my next new PC will be GeForce 8800 GT but I will plan to upgrade into 8800 GTS (G92) or 9800 GTX, both of them are outperform 8800 GT.

Never want go back to ATI.

Yup, I would love to have 8800 GT for my desktop pc. But heard that it's not exactly ready for Linux. It'll runs but on Compiz, it is okay until they update the driver for 8800GT to run compiz and other graphic smoothly. GeForce 6200 and 6800 ran great on Compiz. ATI is catching up. ATI is working with Linux while Nvidia dont have propriety software for Linux. So Hopefully Nvidia start working with Linux soon..
