Khaleej Times Online - Cochlea implant reduces deaf cases in Bahrain

Sign language is fading away in Bahrain after the success of cochlea implants that could restore up to 100 per cent of hearing ability.

Head of Hearing and Cochlea Implant Centre at the Ministry of Health Dr Ahmed Jamal said that the government has not beenneglecting or underestimating the importance of sign language but because of the free cochlea implants operations, deaf cases were reducing tremendously.

He said that 68 cases had been included in the implants scheme that cost more than BD1 million, while 15 children had underwent the operation outside Bahrain.

He warned of the side affects of interfamily marriages in increasing hearing disorders among Bahraini children.

He said that 38 per cent of deaf and hearing problems in Bahrain were because of intermarriages, while 30 per cent because of recessive genes.

Besides enhancing awareness about the affects of intermarriages and the importance of early intervention, Bahrain has succeeded in the implants operations. After the implants children undergo rehabilitation programmes to gain their full hearing and talking skills.

"The government started hearing screening for almost all newborn children at its maternity hospitals for early intervention," Dr Jamal said. "We are operating on two children who are one year and above on a monthly basis."

Dr Ahmed highlighted that the implants with the right rehabilitation restore 100 per cent of hearing skills and 80 per cent of speech skills. The speech progress of the child depends on its readiness, age and training he or she gets.
"Some parents seek medical assistant too late because of social misconceptions or poor educational backgrounds , but hopefully the public because more aware of how to react in dealing with hearing disorders," he said.

What a stupid guy! Sign language fading away and restoring 100% hearing ability, what a pile of manure!

No doubt. Talk bout telling outright lies! This goes beyond the usual misrepresentation.

On the other hand, in the Middle East it's fairly common to have close relatives marry. Not father-daughter but more like.....niece and uncle pairings as well as first cousin pairings.
