A COMPANY is offering free training to charities to help communicate with the deaf and hard of hearing.
The initiative is part of a national awareness campaign to encourage people with communication difficulties to use the telephone.
RNID Typetalk has offered Age Concern, Samaritans, Salvation Army and Help the Aged, free training workshops giving support, advice and guidance on how to use the service.
Typetalk employs relay assistants using a combination of text and speech, to enable people with communication difficulties to hold real time telephone conversations with friends, family and organisations.
It is hoped the organisations involved will become Typetalk aware and pass their knowledge of the service on to the millions of people who use its services.
Director at RNID Typetalk, Lorna Stephenson said: “It is important that the RNID Typetalk service reaches all members of society. A large proportion of people experience some form of hearing loss and we want to make those people aware of technology that can help them on a daily basis.
“Our service has been developed to allow anyone who finds it difficult to communicate with others to live a full and happy life and be able to use the telephone as and when they like.”
People with hearing and speech difficulties need a textphone to make and receive calls, but hearing people do not need any specialist equipment.
