icCoventry - Deaf customers to get better service

STAFF at Nuneaton Town Hall have completed a sign language course - to improve the borough council's service to deaf customers.

Thirteen members of staff, including members of the council's customer service team, volunteered to take part in the two-month course accredited by the Open College Network and run by Deafine, a Nuneaton-based training company.

It will, says the borough council, further enhance the services being offered by the authority's new Contact Centre at the Town Hall.

Former borough mayor Julie Jackson, now the cabinet member for central services, said: "I am extremely pleased the council has been proactive and recognised the need to have the ability to communicate to all our customers effectively.

"Following the commitment we made to achieving disability equality, this is a step forward to improving our customer service to our disabled residents."

That sounds really cool. I wonder what the population of this borough is and how many deaf citizens reside therein? Apparently, enough for them to take the course.

Is it easier for hearing people to learn BSL than it is to learn ASL?

Yeah, I know she's in Australia; Melbourne, specifically, lol. The news article seems to have emanated out of the UK and I kinda think Miss D would know more about BSL than us Americans. Asking her about Aulan's good, too....
