Toddler found playing on US freeway

The kids go to school during the week and she has some time to sleep after the kids are gone to school and on the weekends, she can get up alittle earlier to be ready for the kids then send them off to the grandparent's house then come home, unpack and get everything straightened out in her apartment then catch some much needed sleep and start the week with more enegry, send the kids off to school, it is a matter of time management.

Toddlers are 2-3 years old, Heath...Some toddlers don't start pre-school until the age of 3 or 4...

First, we don’t know the woman’s financial situation. She may not have $5 to her name, after a big move with 2 young children. If she did have $5, she may need it to feed herself and the children. Furthermore, I can assure you that my 3-yr-old was able to get past EVERY child-proof lock on the market.

That is if she were able to get them in to preschool at age 4. Since she just moved to the area, it may be difficult to get them enrolled in Head Start (the program fills up quickly with low-income children). Public kindergarten doesn’t start until the child is age 5.

For the record, I am glad the child is all right. I just don't want to judge until all the facts are known. If it turned out that the mother was high on drugs and that is why she was at home passed out, then by all means "hang 'er high".

But they're not a guarantee of protection since no device is completely childproof, my 3rd child was able to opened the door even I had placed a safty door knobs that looks like white plastic ball, also they were able to take covers off of the outlet plates..Yike...and I placed a safety latch on all my bottom cabinets in the kitchen and bathroom, I suppose they opened it too hard and it broke off....My house was packed up with childproof safety devices and some of them didn't even worked as I was hoping it would....:dizzy:

I know at first it was difficult for them to open it but then I suppose they got a little bit smarter and firgure it out....
 
True, I guess I did not take into account all of these things. It can add up to a really bad day. I am glad the baby is going to be alright. I still can't believe the baby crawled onto the freeway. If the mother is really innocent then I hope she does not get hit really hard with the book in court and I am sure this was a very big wake up call for her even though, this was a very honest mistake with her being a overworked, very tired mom. If she is really guilty then shame on her and she needs help. It probably would be a very long time before she can get her kids back. She may have to spend some time in a women's prison until she gets out. I still think this was a honest mistake and hope things work out for the best, somehow.

I know that Eve, I have three children of my own, I wasn't born yesterday...
 
Mostly High percentage of mothers are exhausted from work and not even thinking about other things... Children can may be smart and figures it out open the door.. Many things children are outsmart and finally freed outside and walk wandering the night or day time whatever... Cannot be blamed to Mother first place.. Just wait and see find it out what going on...

Why the child protection taken away their children from mother? Ridcouisly.. Should have wait until find it out what going on investington first!!!!! Police is jumpy and press charge to mother for neljection children make an offical. Wait and find it out w/Judge's opnion!

She is not alone..

I've so stunned surprised that Police came into my house and woke me up middle the night at 3am.. Police didn't press the charge me because I'm DEAF and cannot hear him escape out the door... Police really surprised that my older son when he was 3 yrs old and bring the chair and reach the lock. I was so upset and cried horrible why my son walked out the middle night and wandering the sidewalk.. I'm glad Police spotted him and asked my son where you live... Police did brought him return home safety.. Next day, Police came over my place and install special lock security.. Wow, Nice of police officer helped me... We are Deaf.. Is that possible We are nelection children? Nope..

Few years later, I have three children... Two children are toddlers and 1 yrs old (last son) lead on the screen window 2nd storey floor.. He did fell out the window.. while I was in bathroom.. sort of personal things.. and came out spotted my two toddlers spoke me too fast talk.. I ask them slow down what wrong... My older son( was about 5 yrs old) pointed finger to the front door... I opened the door.. WHOA.. I'm shocked and wide open eyes... My last son was stand up and cried... I lift him up... my gosh.. I rushed him into the hospital... Everything went well.. somehow Child protection came over and took ALLLL CHILDREN AWAY.. I was so hell upset and pissy off.. I have nothing wrong so many issues... went over seeing our lawyer and went court.. I won the case... Child proection not happy and want war w/us... goal taken our children away for good because we are deaf.. not allowed have Deaf parent have children.. Judge really angrily and call child protection You're prejuiced! Warning will come trail... we will won the case for sure... We were won the court... EVERYTHING settled... and decide moved out because of next door kept constantly calling the child protection almost everyday... that what my lawyer told me EVERYTHING.. We have force and sell my old townhouse.. *shutters horrible past whole thing ain't fun through hell long years ago* Pretty longest longest story.. This is my story shortly!!!

This woman will speak it out herself and will get her children return home soon.. Hopefully!

Don’t get so defensive, Angel. I wasn’t making the comment towards you. I know you have kids, but not everyone jumping to conclusions here do.

GalaxyAngel, isn’t it funny how CPS can rush in and take the kids away without knowing the facts, yet there have been so many times when they have allowed children to be abused and neglected because they didn’t want to be bothered? I think the reason they jumped in is because they were more worried about how the public would perceive the situation, not based on the level of danger the children would be in.
 
This specific news article is some joke, first of all it says the police charges her for the condition of her apartment, when she already stated that she just moved from Florida to Indiana. Secondly of all there's no father being mention in this article, where's the father? Is she a single mother with two toddlers? She has to do all the unpacking on her own, who's gotta help her unpack, so she has a reason why her place was in a messy condition. We don't even know if she is employed, if she is working late third shift or whatever her reasons are to be still sleeping in, It also didn't tell the time when the toddler was found, how early Saturday morning 6 am, 7 am? I mean come on, we shouldn't quick judge the mother yet. I'm not going to jump to conclusion yet until I read more to this story. :)
 
This is from the local newspaper in Indianapolis where it happened at - 3-year-old boy found running on I-465 | IndyStar.com It's got more specific informations about what was happening, so and on.

Here's a quote in the newspaper that I would like to point out -
The incident led to the arrest of the boy's mother on two charges of child neglect after Merritt found she wasn't aware that her son had slipped out of her apartment.

The second charge related to the discovery of a second child eating spaghetti off the floor, police said. Officers said they also found trash in the apartment and feces on the walls.

It happened two times, not one, TWO times that the son has slipped out without her awareness. The mother also has another child and that is why they (the agencies, etc) used that on the mother to remove the children out of her place because of the condition were unsuitable for the children to live in.

I am glad that the 3 years old boy came out of it alive but to know that it has happened, It just makes me wonder what was the mother thinking of? Was she using the "sleeping" act as an excuse to save her butt? Or it could be something else that we don't know of. There's so many possibilities.

U are right...better to wait until the facts come out. I just shudder the thought of this child being on a such a busy highway. I would have nightmares forever if I witnessed that.

ok that's it! Now, there is NO excuse for the feces on the wall no matter how tired u are, how poor u are, or whatever. That puts the children in danger even in their own homes with the feces on the wall!!
 
She didn't do it TWO times, she was charged with 2 counts (meaning one count for each child). As for the living conditions....my youngest daughter used to sneak out of her bed in the middle of the night and raid the refrigerator. I am sure my daughter ate off the floor after dumping chocolate syrup, milk, smeared bananas, etc all over the carpet. You should have seen my carpets! There is no amount of steam cleaning that will remove blueberry syrup from carpet. And yes, a 2-yr-old will smear feces on the wall as a form of art. I once moved 300 miles with a moving truck, to show up and find that the apartment I had put a deposit on was not ready as promised. I had spent all my money on the move and had no funds for a hotel. The place was DISGUSTING (roaches, sewage, etc). I spent the entire night in the truck with my daughter, then got up the next morning to try and clean as much as possible so that we would have a place to stay. What we don't know is if the smeared feces had just happened as a result of the mother falling asleep, if it was there prior to her moving in, or when it happened.

Still...get baby proof locks or ask the apt to get a chain lock for the top of the door!!! Why didnt she get that done in the 6 months she had been living there?

It did happen two times..the mother even used the word "again" when referring to her child getting out.

Also, the article said she had been living in her apt for 6 months? Enough time to clean feces?

I don't know about the trash and the feces on the wall though because some kids are naturally messy but for sure by 6 months, she should have had something worked out, after all most women help another women out, especially when it comes to kids and babysitting.

What about boxes full of super heavy stuff in front of the door? If the child got past that then that is one damn super strong child! Something seems fishy to me.

We have no idea if they were just empty boxes, heavy boxes, or just something to block the door. The point is the media only reports what they want to make the situation look worse than it is. That is what draws our attention and causes us to continue reading. I am sure the full truth and both sides of the story will come out in court. I will wait till all the evidence is provided before I jump to any conclusions.
 
I agree with Valuablelesson that the story is very one-sided (as they tend to be), but that doesn't excuse the parent(s) for not paying enough attention to know whether their child was at risk of being killed. On one end of the scale I'm happy that the child is safe and removed from a home where they might have ended up dead from lack of supervision, but at the same time it's never nice to think of families being broken up and children having to grow up in an orphanage or something of the sort.
 
Once upon a time a young mother, who happened to be a teacher on summer break, was sleeping in at the late hour of 9 a.m. on a Saturday morning. Said mother was dog-sitting for her parents 2 toy poodles. When she woke up, the young mother found that her toddler had already gotten out of bed, so she went to the living room to find her daughter. Walking down the hall, the mother noticed patches of hair all down the hallway. When she came to the living room, she found 2 extremely bald poodles (not a pretty sight) and a 2-year-old who had decided to give herself bangs that reached all the way to the back of her head.
The moral of this story....when you have children, you can't supervise 24-hours a day.
