Hi y'all,
I dont know if this is a right place to put this up, i just wanted to learn more about SSI, money from government or just explain it to me clearly. i have a deaf friend that works full time but she gets SSI also maybe up to 400 a month, so im just curious, is that possible you can do that if you work full time and get ssi, also? or is there a reason to do that? if anyone know anything about this, i wld absolutey love to know the details, thanks!

some SSI info

Hi there
Heres a few things I know about recieving SSI as a deaf person. You need to have a bi -lateral profound hearing loss. You recieve whatever the maximun cash grant is per month if you are not working or your parents are not working (if they are a minor). When you start bringing in an income they start deducting money from your monthly SSI allowance. You still continue to get medical benefits when you are working as long as it does not exceed a certain amount monthly,,I think you can make somewhere around $3100 without having med benefits stop. I also know that I should have been informed by SOMEone that my son can recieve SSI when he was diagnosed ,,, not years later.
Hope that helps a bit

This is misleading! Nope, 3,100 dollars is false! Here is how it is calculated, first of 85 dollars is not counted from income, then for every 2 dollars you earn from work, then a dollar is cut from SSI check. Here is just an example

SSI check $580 dollars
wage from work 285.00 in a month
minus 85 is 200, then divided them by half,
that leaves 100, then minus 100 from 580, so that leaves you
480 dollars from SSI

No 9 months grace period for SSI.

For SSDI, totally different formula. 9 months trial is granted in a lifetime. if you work at least 20 hours a week, and earns more than 850 dollars a month, you disqualified for SSDI check. That is it.

ahh,, do not bother with ssi... ssi tried to make my hubby to pay 30,000 bucks back, eventually my hubby ended up in court and my hubby won the lawsuit over ssi.

I second that, once you get in system, it is harder to get out of system!

diehardbiker65 and others who posted here about the earning while on SSI are being delusive. I wondering why you guys did not check on the facts rather than conjecturing what SSI will allow you to earn?? I do not know where, how, who, and why you got your statement from...??, I got my facts and truths from Detailed Work Incentives Information. This is where you want to find out what SSI or SSDI will allow you to earn so much per month. Look it up and you will find the answers there.

One could try making some good money on their own while getting SSDI is through the Ticket to Work program. Its been passed and signed into law.

The only thing interesting about Ticket to Work is it exends the trial work period from 9 months to 5 years.

But the problem is it's not funded good enough to be effective at getting the disabled off SSI/SSDI so the whole thing about Ticket to Work is it's a bunch of words on paper with the President's signature.

It's become more of a politician's brownie point than a real incentive for the disabled to get to work.

You think I failed to look though? Your terrible mistaken, I have SSI, and I know their SYSTEM very well for 25 years! My 25 years experience with SSI already tells me everything! It really depends on case per case on work incentives.

You are almost twenty years old. Get your ass to find a job !! Do not waste our tax payer to sit around 24 hours !

Wasting taxpayer isn't the real problem. The real problem is getting out of SSI system! The longer your on SSI system, the more mess you will run into. These SSI people are good at fuck up everything and you will have to chalk up their mistakes! I have seen enough! Whats more, the longer in employment gap makes job search harder! Why? trust me, any employer would look at dates of employment in resume and wondering what the hell are you doing from this year to this year? For example, employer would wonder what are you doing between say 1990 and 2005. How can you explain to them? They won't like hear that your on welfare from these years! They will think your using drugs or something and forget you.

Yes, it is true that it is EASIER to get in SSI system than to get out of them. Just think about this, easier to get in? But you fight to get in... meaning it would be twice harder than you discovered.

You don't have enough work credit to qualify for SSDI! You must earn specific amount of credits to qualify. If you become disabled since birth then you need at least 20 work credits Meaning about 8 years worth of work to qualify.
For those who become disabled at 20 yrs old, they will need about 30 credits to qualify. I just can't remember the formula but it is there. Where do you think SS gets credit info of yours from? The infamous I R S!!! So, there is NO way around.

I was talking to a friend of mine one day. This was back in the mid 80’s. We were talking about Social Security and he was telling me about his deaf friends. He said he was born deaf. He married a deaf girl and they had 5 deaf children. Their combined Social Security income was over $60,000 a year. He said they live in a nice brick house, drove a new car and had a nice boat. His friend and wife were perfectly healthy even though they were deaf and could work at any number of jobs. They travel alot every summer time. These kinds of people should not receive my tax dollars as far as I am concerned.

I also am not in favor of supporting mothers who have irresponsible. I have known of numerous instances where there was a man living in the house but the couple would not get married because they would lose their welfare. This issue may or may not have to do with Social Security money. Either way it has to do with my tax dollars. They just sleep all the day and parties.

I am sick of American Disability Deaf people collect the SSI as their healthy are perfectly and fucking lazy !!

I am single Mom of two children. I work TWO jobs... I do not feel sorry for the Deaf people who can't find the jobs.

I really don't feel sorry neither! I am not disagree with you about tax dollars. What I am trying to say is that once somebody gets in the system, it is real tough to get out. For various reasons. I had trouble getting out several times. And I am STILL in SS system!!! Even though I am working now. So do you think those who already in SS would even bother leaving them when they knew they can't get out of it even when getting job? I really don't like the way SS people handles the case. If they had done decent job with their caseload, then there won't be much tax dollars being wasted on.

My number one belief in Uncle sam's budget problem is burecract costs!!! That is something we need to work on it. Maybe you don't realize, there is plenty of people in gov't office doing the SAME thing over and over and over. The reason for this is to MAKE SURE that no one would forge any documents, and info. this is HUGE waste of money. I won't be surprised that there already at least 1,000 gov't employees checked my records. FOR WHAT?

I wanted to add this. Cut the welfare and SSI/SSDI will not solve problem, will not save taxpayer's money. It actually increase the spending! Proof is already here. I know it sound odd or strange, but the fact is there.
Monroe county here where I live. They have had severe cuts on welfare in hope to get those lazy bums back to work. Did this work? Nope! It went the opposite side... after these cuts, Monroe county end up in red, and owe more money than it was before the deep cuts. They decided to raise property taxes, guess what? a year after the increase on taxes. Monroe county is now in deeper debt, and is now forced to borrow money.

Welfare and SSI is really a cushion to economy. Without them, economy will collapse. Plm here is, gov't need to learn to be flexible and be business like. Tell you this, when I had problem with previous employer. I screamed for help, I knocked the Dept of labor door, Knocked Dept of education (Vocation rehabilation), knocked alot of door and asked for help. Know what the answer I recieved? It is... "Because you have full time job, you don't need our help!". WTF??? So, I just let it go and couple months later, I was fired from work. Know what I did afterwards? Go back to these gov't doors and I said, "I now am without job, so now you pay all expense for me to look for job!". Now ask yourself, which way is cheaper helping me with my previous employer so I can stay there OR get fired and spend over 20,000 dollars for me to look for another job? Think about it, that is what PISSED me off, they are wasting your tax money! $20,000 dollars includes counseling, training, interpreting service provided, work trial wage, etc, etc... I think it is more than 20,000 dolalrs but I'd play safe to say at least 20k. On other hand, it MIGHT cost less than 5,000 to save my old job. eh?

That's correct. What makes it different about SSA and SSDI?

SSA stands for Social Security Administration. The agency that oversees whole Social Security system. SSDI is just Social Security DIsability, a free long term disability insurance! I refused to buy long term disability insurance BECAUSE SS offers that too. So, its pointless have two insurances, and can't claim both anyway.

SSDI, SS funds came directly from Social security taxes. While SSI, in other word Social suppliment Income, and that funds comes from general federal taxes. Now you see why you need to work over specific amount of time in order to qualify for SSDI or SS benefits. On other hand, for SSI, no need to have work history to qualify. Just severe disability would qualify.
