Housing Unaffordable For Many With Disabilities, Report Finds

Section 8 take care of people that are a high risk , like single mothers that are trying to get away from an abusive b/f or husband . My niece tried to get section 8, she has Asperger and was told the wait was going to very long b/c they took care single mothers first. I told my sister this would happen. There is a horrible shortage of low in come housing in my state.

There is domestic violence shelter.

Most single mothers are not victim of domestic violence - it happens when boyfriends abandon or adopt a baby as single parent.

I don't want my taxes goes to house the low income families that where many American (including veterans) with disabilities suffer without housing.

I know that but I you telling section 8 rent to single mother in abusive situation first . And what are talking about ! domestic violence is not when a father abandon his family , it when he beat the crap of them and has compete control over the money car etc . The mother child lives are at risk and domestic violence shelter is the first place a violent man will look for his 'woman'. Women have to be moved out a domestic violence shelter and moved to a safe house . They can't stay there forever.

He did not say a father abandoning his family was domestic violence. He said that a lot of single women who need housing is because of the father abandoning the family, not because of domestic violence.

Yes, that's correct.

I have no sympathy for single mothers who are not victim of DV and deadbeat fathers.

Section 8 funding already ran out for years and waiting list is getting much longer, much as 10 years, 20 years or 30 years.

When Section 8 was created in 1974 so waiting list was much shorter due more funding.

What I am talking about is not dead beat dad , I am talking about single mothers needing a safe place to live b/c they have abusive b/f or husbands or ex husband. An abusive guy does not like to lose contact of where the woman is living and shelters for domestic abuse are easy to find . When I went to college I wanted to be a social worker and we had to go to homeless shelter and shelter for in women domestic violent situation . The woman that worked there told us that had to move woman out at night to a safe house b/c the abuser found out where the woman was living .
We have a huge problem with domestic violent , there was thread about woman being killed , sadly this happen too many times. Plus funding is being cut everywhere in my state and people with disabilities and mental health issue get cut first. I am not saying this is right ,
if people are not happy about this they have to be proactive and made
phone calls and write letters and not just complain on line.

Most Section 8 apartments are in high crime area and 911 take forever for police officer to response. The abusers can find victims by using white page or looking up online.

Women with DV are much smaller in pie but most fathers (aka boyfriend) abandoned the family or don't want to be responsible for taking care of child are not related to DV. Some women are provoking at fathers that escalate into DV.

I don't believe that government is responsible for single mothers who are DV or father abandoned the family, so it cost a lot of our taxes and American with disabilities are without home or subpar housing.
 
Before 1960s, having a sex before marriage and single mothers (never married) is strongly denounced so DV cases and abandonment of family were much smaller than today, but if women were victim of DV usually end up in divorce and re-marry to other men.
 
Don't forget that in the 50s and 60s so many women had babies taken away from them and put into adoption.

The only thing that is going to lower unsupported births is better family planning education, easy and cheap access to birth control, and fathers paying for their children when they leave them with the mothers. I don't think marriage is necessary to have a solid family. In uh, Denmark? one of the countries in that area, maybe the Netherlands most mothers are unmarried. Something like 65%. However, in that country you don't have to be married to get the benefits that you have to be married to get in the US. With their better sex ed and better equality and support, they simply don't have the problems we do here.

Section 8 housing vouchers do not give them based on 'preference' or who gets them 'first'. They base it on the waiting list that they maintain (which in many states are years long and in some states they may not give out ANY vouchers some years because they've hit their limit), your name comes to the top you're next in line to get a voucher. As I understand it that's true in Texas. I have a deaf-blind friend who has had section 8 housing in both Oklahoma and Texas (some good some bad) but I don't think they give the housing to Domestic violence survivors or to single mothers first over disabled... that's poppycock.

Wait... please don't quacking at me.

Some housing agencies put DV and single mothers on top of waiting list if they were displaced, it is housing agencies's discretion.

My point about issue - American with disabilities aren't prioritized to get housing first before low income families and non-disability people, so without option, they left homeless or living in institution.

The welfare is designed to provide a basic needs for people with disabilities and elderly before liberalized by JFK era over war on poverty.

because it's done by waiting list-- yes sometimes domestic violence will get in ahead of disabled...and sometimes disabled will get in ahead of domestic violence or others. In lots of ways the system is broken...I don't know it will be fixed or what will happen...

But because the list is so damned long and so many other problems I won't even consider Section 8- have to wait too long :(. So I don't know which is worse.. wait for and get Section 8 (and where it is is a crapshoot too) or deal with living with family (for what feels like forever lol).

That is what my sister was told when she called for her daughter . That her daughter had to go on a waiting list and domestic violence case come first . So if my niece was next on the list and a domestic violence case came up my niece would be knocked out of place. She was living at home with her parents and was not consider at risk . I told my sister this would happen before she called. The real problem is there just is not enough low in come housings and people are living longer now. So elderly people have to go on a waiting list too. I had a client that was homeless b/c she could not afford an apartment and there was a long waiting list for a low income apartment .

Well, Ducky, you are fortunate that you do have family to take you in. I know that is not ideal. Hope you can get better accommodations one day soon.
 
I rather own a house than depending on government housing assistance.

Mortgage limit either 15 or 30 years, once its paid off, no more payment afterwards... apt rental, rent remains in effect for the rest of life, plus potential increase in rental.

Say if I am 70 years old, I could sell my house thats already paid off, and use that money for whatever I wanted, with rental, can't do that.

Glad I am homeowner!

there is section 8 house right near me and I don't live in a high crime city. Single mother or DV mother come first , if a person is disables and has kids they would come before a single disable person .

rent to one client . I lived upstairs with my child and I could refuse a renter so I said "No, ". I would had not been able to get rid of her if she stopped paying rent. The woman has the state on her side.
 
Not all are in high crime areas- the person I know in TX doesn't live in a crime area (fairly nice from what I understand), same in OK. But it does seem like MANY are in high crime areas because the landlords need/want "easy" money without realizing the realities of keeping up the property to code (and many don't either.

Apartment living I can live with or condo; its the income I worry about. I don't think I ever will own a home- never did because I moved around so much in the last 10 years and my income fluctuated a lot. Maybe will inherit this or my aunt's house but I'm betting they all will live well into their 90s lol.

Not everyone could afford to pay down payment for mortgage and credit check is mandatory.

The government does have HUD program to help low income families to own a house with low interest mortgage, also there is USDA assistance for rural area.

Own a house that require a lot of work while short on money = you are basically screw up.

The foundation repair could cost much as $30,000+ (if more severe), broken central AC cost about $10,000 to replace and renovation cost much money.
