No more mail delivered to homes?

It is definitely coming to this. And, all the government has to do is go into the internet email business, that's it. There should be a nominal charge for internet mail which would will cover the cost of snail mail.

They don't want to do it because it would mean the government would need a warrant to access your email. It's stupid because it is a service that has been provided, at cost to the public, since the beginning. There is no reason it should not be maintained electronically and physically.

For that matter, the government should be providing internet access as well or at least create a natural monopoly like the old telephone system.

There are many communities around here where I live where they already have these community mail boxes. It seems to work for most. (I can understand those who are not as mobile would have a hard time, but the article does say waivers can be obtained in those types of situations). My first home (as an adult) had a community mailbox. It was nice that it happened to be located on MY yard :) We are building a new home now and we will have the same thing (houses are too far apart, I think and that's why) so I will have to drive about 1 - 1 1/2 blocks to the mailbox.

In here, curbside mailboxes are very common and door to door delivery is common in historic neighborhoods and community mailboxes are common in apartments and condos.

USPS did try that back then in mid 80's or maybe little late 80's But they have NO patience with profit. They see it as money losing venture so sold to (I forgot the name of that company, something to do with "In the box") after 6 months trial period, then the first buyer sold to MCI then renamed to Verizon. That patent already sold out so won't happen (Charges on e mail, really technically part of Internet connection plan anyway).

I do remember the news in media about E mail concept, never thought it would become reality in just few years later.

Edit: I think it is the "Internet in a box" I m not sure if that is right name, very vaguely remember, the color is red and white. Just like Verizon.

I bet a lot of them get broken into around holidays when people send checks and gift cards as gift. What happen when people want to send a packages at Christmas , are they just left on the ground for anyone to steal? This is horrible and I can tell anyone the work for the government will still be getting their mails brought right to their front door.

I don't think they could do that in our neighborhood because there's no place to put community boxes.

I've seen community boxes in local apartment complexes but not in single-family neighborhoods.

What are the two bigger boxes for?

Maybe for items that are too big to fix in the smaller boxes ?? My condo has our mail boxes in the hallway and I hate it when other people mail in put in my box , it made me wonder if my is in the wrong mailbox. I got check and it was put in my neighbor box and he just left my mail out for anyone to take. I was home at the time and we live right next door to one another .

What are the two bigger boxes for?

Packages. And only those with keys can get to them. But it's not a fool proof way to prevent someone else from taking a package that isn't theirs. When I had that community mailbox, those larger units were never used. It was dropped off at the front door like normal.

What are the two bigger boxes for?

We have these in my neighborhood. The two larger boxes are for packages or anything that does not fit in our mailbox. Mailman leaves a key in our box if we have a package in the bigger box.

• Save gas
• less walk for PO delivery
• reduce thief
• Winning?

I don't get people's fears about these locked boxes being broken into. Your plain old mailboxes at the street have no locks, I don't see how they pose more risk. We live in in a permanent trailer park (I joke, our houses are all modular housing from the 70s, it's like living in a double wide mobile home) and we have these boxes here. Our packages are dropped to our houses and mail goes to the boxes. There's never been a problem with stealing, even though we live in the "poor" part of town (my town truly does not have a shitty area to it, despite its size) where all the sexual offenders live. If you're lucky, you manage to get a 1k square foot house for under 300k in this part of town. No garage, however.

I am in a house in a neighborhood that has boxes or mail slots in the doors of each house. Mail is sometimes delivered to the wrong house (usually for someone close). So it does not have to be an apartment or cluster box situation.

Calvin's pic is like the set up my aunt had when she lived in NM. She lived on a "mountain" ( a smallish one lol) so travel up was challenging and the houses were REALLY far apart so the mailboxes was at the bottom. As already noted the packages/mail too big would go in the bigger boxes and the key to that box left in the person's personal mailbox.

As for the quoted-- you'd be surprised. When I lived in Colorado, one of my apartment complexes- the mail boxes were centralized in a room with a door. Somebody DID break into some of the mail boxes and stole mail. The management ended up locking the door to the mail center at all times (with residents & Mail carrier being the only people with keys). Most other apartments I've lived in, the "mail center" was more or less open air type set ups but as far as I know never broken into even though at least once I would see a broken mail box door (personal or the "Outgoing Mail" slot). One place the mail center was on the other side of the complex :P.

USPS is already struggling so badly financially and cutting back so much on delivery and Post Offices that this doesn't really surprise me. I have (or had..she defriended me :P) a friend who is a postal carrier and have shared a few horror stories with scheduling, pay etc...

I agree. When I was talking about the community mailboxes in my area, I never felt any risk with my mail more than a regular mailbox at all. I don't play into paranoia much. :)

We have had these mailboxes for 25-30 years. Large packages are left by our front door. The only problem I have had happened recently, when my daughter sent me chocolate and they placed it in our mailbox. They're reshipping it this week and I have no idea when it will get here. Problem is it's really HOT outside and the chocolates melt.

****It would be so cool if your got an email when your mail arrived.

How far do any of you have to go for the community and boxes? Do you walk or drive? How do you know what time the mail is in the box?
