1 million background checks expected this holiday season

The gift of a gun may be high on many Floridians' holiday shopping lists. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement says it is on target to conduct nearly 1 million background checks this year on private firearm purchases.

The projection comes as the department is reporting a record number of reviews conducted over the Thanksgiving weekend, more than 13,000.

Troy Gibson and his wife just got their concealed weapons permit and say guns are at the top of their Christmas wish list.

“She wants to get a .38 and I want to get a 9mm,”

Others have the same hopes this holiday season. Managers at Green Acres say guns and ammo, especially .22 long rifle ammo, are flying off the shelves, especially this month.

“More people are getting into shooting," said Green Acres Manager, Phillip Gazaleh. "More of a pastime of family, fathers and sons, fathers and daughters going out and enjoying shooting.”

Gazaleh says the increase in sales is also because people are taking advantage of great deals.

"The Henry 22 lever action, they're normally $400, but you can buy them for Christmas for like $250 we have on sale," Gazaleh said.

Another popular gift this holiday season is a concealed weapon purse. It has a built-in holster and trap door so you can pull your gun out in a hurry.

Some people think giving a gun as a Christmas gift is inappropriate.

"I got kids, they like to play. I won't even buy them water guns, so I think it's stupid,” said Gerald Jefferson.

National Rifle Association lobbyists say gun sales will continue to grow because of the increasing population and a growing awareness of Florida's concealed-carry laws.

"With all the talk in the media, gun control, gun laws changing, crime, people are nervous. They really want to protect themselves or buy guns before there are so many taxes on them they're too expensive to even afford them,” Gazaleh said.

I hope to HELL if people have kids in their house the parents has the brains to made sure their kids can't get their hands on the guns. Maybe people wanting to buy a gun should have an I Q test before being allowed to buy a gun.

Whenever robbery or rape rates go up, so does gun sales. Sad, but that is pretty much the truth.

Somehow the mental image of the traditional Santa with criss crossed bandoliers of bullets and a sleigh full of guns comes to mind.

Hubby and I exchange gun-related gifts at Christmas, in addition to other items. We've done that for years.

I bet you and your hubby are smart gun owners , so I am not worried about a kid getting your guns and bring it to school.

That will really kill the Spirit of Christmas and to destroy our Mother Earth if you use weapons as violence as just to get your way. It would be better to be unarmed and show a good example of being a good person. Don't make the mistake of being a bad person if you use violence against humanity. Sorry, but that is the way we want to have peace on our Mother Earth.

Well besides the sporting aspect (target shooting and plinking) and hunting aspect (Bible references available about that) there is the self defense aspect. It will not do much good to talk to a home invasion criminal and say please leave and here is a cookie. Even Jesus said the man without a sword should sell his cloak and buy one.

However, you are right about not using them to 'get our way'.

I am thinking about buying my wife a panzerfaust. Do you think it would look good in hot pink?

But...but....my wife likes blowing up tanks ....with rockets.

To any BATFE agents that might be stalking/lurking here ....that was just a joke. A joke is something meant to be humorous and funny, I know ...I know....such a hard concept for you guys since you have no sense of humor.

Hmm....i dont think its a good idea to be selling so many arms....i hate them very much. And is probably thw worst gift someone could give me. But everyoe has different opinions, i respect that. But also got to admit. I had a gun in my hand and it could save my life or life of someone i cared for and there was truwly no other way out of situation, then yeah i would use it.

I own a gun. I don't see anything wrong with selling guns to responsible people. Fact of the matter is criminals will ALWAYS have guns, whether we make them illegal or not. ( Hence them being criminals and not caring about laws and everything ) So, I might as well have one to defend myself instead of sitting there like a sitting duck! I love my gun and I bought it as a Christmas present to myself a couple of years back. Best Christmas present I ever bought for myself. I've never shot anyone, and hope it never has to come to that..... but it's nice to know I can defend myself against whatever may come at me. :) I sleep better at night with it. To each their own, you don't have to have one, but again... I see nothing wrong with guns or gun related gifts for Christmas as long as everyone is responsible. Guns and things gun related are expensive! It shows they really care! :laugh2: Seriously though, that stuff is expensive for a Christmas present.

I am actually going on a big game hunt the 19th-21st. I know .. tmw. It is going to be in the middle of the wilderness - no telephone poles, wires, plumbing, shelter .... nothing. It is a bear, buck only, and wild hog hunt - no limit on coyotes.

I am bringing a large tent, my own firewood, food, sub-temp sleeping bag, air mattress, and various other gear (I go gold panning too - I want to be a level 4 redneck so I need the practice).

So ... of course I am bringing my hunting rifle, a shotgun, and my sidearm. Anyone would be wise to do this, anytime they go camping, anywhere. But in my case, I am going to be in a mountainous wilderness. It should be fun.

Be safe - it is your responsibility and no one else.
