Hearing Service animals.

My wife has passed her dog trainers certifications, she has now joined to start training service animals. We will be fostering a lab puppy to train, starting with basic obeidience, then progress to the service animal training ( specifically a hearing service dog ) we have the option to aquire the pup at the end of training ( which my wife wants to train it for me )
It is kind of cool to know the breeders and trainers of the clubs, all animals are AKC and other certified classifications, mostly donated to the clubs for training and placement. So we are filling out the application to keep the pup when training is finished, so we have to pay all vet bills, maintenance and everything involved. My choice is a chocolate lab out of the choices of retrievers and labs group.
 
Cool! I wanted a chocolate but when I found the breeder I really like they only had black labs. My pup is about a year old now and I've been training her to be a duck dog. She is awesome! They are so smart! Training dogs is so rewarding. I'm sure your wife will love it.
 
NEADS go to shelters to finds dogs to train as service dogs . I like that as it save dogs from death road.

This breeder does not allow breeding and you have to sign a contract which includes have them fixed and vetted. The breeder donates pups to various "Service Animal Trainers" to be placed with disabled individuals.
The dogs from the shelters have to go through temperament and other psychological evaluations before they are even trained and a lot of them don't pass. The breeders pup are all evaluated beforehand and certified for training as a service animal. This is a very reputable trainer ( Training Facility for Service Animals )
I agree with saving animals from shelters but those are mainly for household pets and not all shelter animals are compatable with children, are obeidience trained or mentally stable.

on a side note, for those who think and even if the site/trainer says they come from a shelter.... They all don't. They use this as a ploy so they don't have to train an individuals dog...

My dog before this one was a shelter dog. I loved her but it took a ton of work to get rid of bad habbits and some she never really lost. Plus it took a long time for the mental scars from where ever she came from to heal. It has been ten thousand times easier to train a puppy. Not saying you can't train shelter dogs but you need to be good and have lots of time.
 
I have a yellow lab (about 8 months old) and man, he is smart! I'm training him to retrieve ducks and doves... He loves the pool we have. If I can find a video, you can see the way he jumps in the pool....:lol:

You won't regret having a lab. They are super energetic, though, so be prepared for LOTS of exercise! Good luck with your puppy! :D
 
I am currently owner-training with the help of a certified trainer, an American Bulldog/Labrador Retriever mix that came from the shelter. They had him for 3 months and don't know about the 11 months before that.

I have had Deacon now for 6 months and he has done a lot of training. He has about another year to 18 months and he will be a hearing assistance dog.

My wife had a black lab years ago, I also had a black lab a few years back, he grew into a monster... We had to let him go about 3 years ago because our son was born and he was hyper active. He is still in the family, as my wifes in-laws lab died and their kids wanted another so they took him in... I seen him a few months back and he is one monsterous boy, I don't think he was full blooded because he has the build of a Rott.... one big scary looking boy ! I wish we could hunt doves where i am but we cant. I'm hoping to get my pup ready in time for this season but it might be next year. She's doing great but still a ways from knowing what she'll need for the first hunt.

Yeah the dogs that did not pass at NEADS where given to people as pets ,
I am not sure how that worked . I would think a person would had to pay a donation to NEADS. I took Finlay to a vet and the first thing the vet said was that my dog had a heart murmur and he needs a $200 x ray right away! I said No, then the vet said my dog would to be see every month .
I knew the vet was full of crap as dogs that any health issues are not trained for service dogs. I am reading a book called 'Until Tuesday'
it's about the veteran and his service dog.
 
Mostly here you pay $500 with an application fee of $35. After you are placed with a service animal for 1 year, you have a follow up visit to make sure you are doing as the contract says and the pup is cared for, then you are refunded the full $500.
If you don't want the pup anymore, you are required to give it back to be placed with another.

There was a $500 fee plus $ 5,000 you have to come with to get a dog from NEADS. They're not training hearing dogs as much now. They're training dogs for wounded veterans and I got a news to cover a story on this. The puppy is so cute. I thought I was going to get a lab when I got a hearing dog and I got a big goofy black Standard Poodle . He was smart as hell!
 
Poodles are super smart. They used to be hunting dogs. Hunting with them is coming back.

My pup still has a ways to go, too. Just needs to work on some commands They're already pretty good, just need refinement. He has the retrieving down pat, especially the water stuff... he loves retreiving in water, and he considers it better than a doggie biscuit :lol:
The way Beau's coming along, I think he's going to be able to hunt next season. Wish it was this season, but it can't be helped.
