16 yrs old Dies During Her First Solo Drive, Believed To Be Texting

first-time driver and teens should never ever drive on highways or drive anywhere above 45 mph.

and keep their phones off/hidden so they can't mess with their phone while driving!

My daughter has her learners permit. I pray that she takes in what we teach her about driving, and she uses that head on her shoulder. She will be able to get her operators license 1 year from the date of getting her learners.

For new Ohio law at first violations, drivers under 18 will face a $150 fine and license suspension for 60 days; for subsequent violations, under-18s will be slapped with a $300 fine and a year-long license suspension.

Ugh..I have a 16 year old. I couldn't watch the rest of the video. Makes me frightened.

My son is 15, learning to drive. I will make sure he does not have his phone with him!

then how's he gonna contact you or 911 in case of emergency?

Children survived for years like this without a phone and lived to talk about it. You do what they did, tell someone to call for help or wait for help to arrive. I do agree though that in this age, having a cellphone is important for emergency situations given the world we live in. Maybe the safe alternative is finding a cheap phone that has no text, Internet, or anything but the most features.

Perhaps someone is going to come up with a feature that turns off texts when you get into a car.

They already make cars that won't start based on your alcohol levels from breathalyzer.

People freak out when we go backwards in technology! When I was his age, no one had cellphones. They didn't exist! Now they do, people can't seem to function without it.

I've had my ex or people tell me I must be with my phone 24/7 because there were times they couldn't contact me. I'm like WTF? We didn't used to have cellphones. Now there is, we must be glued to our phones 24/7 otherwise people will get mad if you don't answer back right away. Technology has made people too dependent on it.

Another family member dies in the same spot last year, so why the hell did her parents let an inexperience drive on the same highway or any highway along??

My car was T boned by a teenage driver, he been driving his spot car only a week and nearly killed me. I won a settlement with the boy family but I still have head pains from the accident .

confiscating a cellphone or installing some app is not a solution. it's ridiculous to focus and blame on cellphone. focus on the person, not the cellphone. this car crash was the result of driver error, not cellphone.

huh? this is not about some cellphone addiction. that's whole another story. this is about having an option for emergency purpose.

My son will be going for his first stage license (forget what they call it now here in Florida) soon. He already understand the horrors and dangers of texting while driving and lectured someone at the store that he saw doing it. She almost ran over someone.

Daughter does not even want to think about driving and she is my heaving texter (is that even a word?).

I wasn't sure if it was still "restricted" or not. That's what it was called when I got mine many, many moons ago. (34 years)

Me too, rules changed since. Kids must have a rescricted license for 1 full year ticket free, before getting an operators license. Also the first 3 months of having the rescricted they are not allowed to drive while it is dark outside.

My sister had a wreck on her very first solo drive. Only made it a half mile. She wasn't injured though.
