Deaf school in WV looking for renovation needs

All of that is included in educating children.

Really? So should we start sending hearing kids who don't fit in socially to private schools too? Maybe send those who don't speak English to private schools?

It supposed to be illegal but Walmart will find other reason to fire instead of communication issue - they will say that it doesn't meet job expectation, also they have many lawyers that defended themselves in discrimination case. My deaf friend had similar problem but he got fired, so his lawyer strongly advised him to not sue because Walmart was smart (they went around with other reason) and VR had found a job for him, so that was happened in 2006.

That why I hardly shop at Walmart, so I don't like their visual environment.

A responsible employee should document these efforts and gather witnesses. The deaf employee actually holds the power once they are hired. They just have to know how to use it.

It isn't not simple as you think and some employers take advantage of workers with disabilities. There are many deaf people don't have same understanding to handle the situation at work as hearing people do, so some of them have simple job training with basic education at deaf school/mainstream school and they have reading problem.

That why we have VR to support deaf people to resolve the problem at work, but many cases with work issues overwhelmed the VR to handle because of limited funding, so left deaf people's handling with work issues as unsolved, so they will left work to sticking with SSI/SSDI.

It isn't problem for deaf people who have CI and fully oral language (language development at toddler), so went through the school without interpreter and very well with college, even little or no accommodation.

I found deafdyke's story is true and very sad. :(

I see that as an excuse. Of course there are challenges, that is why we have laws. The laws give people with disabilities leverage.

I disagree with you about excuse and I'm sad that you don't believe because being late deafened doesn't have similar experience as born deaf, so disadvantage and delayed learning are problem for deaf children (I was one of them).

Do you think ALL people are perfectly ability to understand and resolve the work situation? Not really, not many of them are understand about laws.

You totally misunderstood my post, read it again. Note "of course there are challenges, that is why we have laws"

Ok, I guess it is time for move on.

NOTE: When I said "OK" so it doesn't means I agree with you, so I just want move to end the argument.

There was no argument. Let me ask you, when you felt Walmart was mistreating you, what did you do?

I was talk and question the manager and co-manager (head) about mistreatment, also emailed to my VR counselor. Walmart have too many managers and 2 co-managers. I found that contact VR about job issues was very red tape and they didn't get my email until one month, so VR was horrible to handle about job issues but they do better to handle with school issues, at least for AL.

I didn't have problem with Walmart in IL, so I transferred to other Walmart in AL so the problems started.

Did you go to the VR office after they were slow to respond? Talk to the stores General Manager? Did you show up for work on time? Were there people there that Saw you working hard and trying to do your job?

The appointment is strictly required for VR office and this office was 1 hour away from my home.

The general manager is co-manager - highest manager in the store.

Yes, I arrive to work on time all time, so late to work was rare due to car accident or pulled by police for question. Yes, my supervisor know me very well and he saw me as working hard since manager disagreed. The supervisor watch me when I working frequently and work with supervisor, however manager rarely see me.

Did you follow the chain of command and contact the area manager? Did you have someone call VR when they didn't reply? Did you contact local media outlets? Contact an attorney?

At Walmart, beyond the store - district manager (there are no chain of command nor is area manager) - I tried to call district manager office and they said that situation must be handled with co-manager at the store, also store has to submit the paperwork to district manager as well. I went to stuck with those situation and continued to work until resignation because of school and medical condition. I will never work at Walmart again anymore.

Yes, my aunt helped to call VR office, however my VR counselor was deaf, she can't take voice call, except for VP. She went out of office really often to deal with many cases. The clerk at office told us to contact VR counselor via email or VP, but VP was out of option because I didn't have one at earlier. Like I said, the VR was very overwhelmed with many cases and fewer workers, according to my VR counselor.

I don't know about local media outlet and they are not right place to solve the situation at work.

No, my VR told me to not contact lawyer about situation at work and they want all situation to resolve at their office, before I call lawyer. I filed the complaint with NAD and they strongly advised me to talk with VR.

The media is a great place to go if store management wouldn't help you.

VR wasn't even responding. I would have gone to them even without an appointment. 1 hour is not that far. I would have contacted an attorney as well, why listen to VR if VR isn't helping you.

Calling a district/area/regional Mgr does no good. You have to write them, give details about the situation and send it certified mail.

The fact is, you had tons of leverage, just like most disabled people do. But you have to make the effort to use it. Once you quit, there is not much you can do.

I like to add comment to deafdyke's post.

I learned about many situations with deaf children and deaf adults. When I was Gallaudet student, I had to type the research paper about social issues with deaf people, so I read a lot of information about education, job, communication, families, etc. The disabled employees didn't receive a fair treatment as normal, hearing employees, except for deaf businesses or government jobs. There are many deaf children didn't receive same education to compete with hearing children, also some deaf children have other layer problems. The communication is very different - oral language vs. visual language. Gallaudet has rich resource and many researches about problem with deaf people, and many citations are limited to university.

I don't know about how many leverages are available and I'm just followed the procedure to solve the problem at work, that I learned from job training at school.

My reason about resign the work has small part of situation with mistreatment, however I took school and medical condition as biggest reason. I was in one step from getting fired for many absences (kidney stone, new chronic illness) and work-related accidents.

Well, in fairness, those are legitimate reasons for termination. They would fire anyone for having work related accidents.

As for leverage, it is there. Disabled workers are backed by the ADA. That gives them a lot of power.

Oh ok, the ADA doesn't mean deaf person say - "Hey boss, you must hire me now because of ADA" and the boss can give a reason to not hire like lack of experience, lack of job position or bad job history. ADA is intended to ban on discrimination, specifically to disabilities and the court case with ADA, I have to obtain a hard evidence to win the case, however without hard evidence, it is mixed result or favor employer.

Exactly. That is why I asked if you showed up on time and had others that would vouch for you. Most employers are afraid of going to court against the disabled, not to mention the public relations nightmare. That is where the leverage comes from.
