I went to dentist today for regular cleaning and they found that I have broken filling in upper right, so they did filled in 2010. They told me that I probably need have crown and they went ahead to clean it. After cleaned, the dentist came to check my teeth and told me that he has to re-filling so if the filling breaks again, so he will have to crown it because my tooth structure is getting weaker for filling and make easier to break.

The crown is very expensive, about same price as MacBook Pro for one tooth. My dentist usually fill after break at first, if break again so crown is last resort.

They found that I have minor decay in 3 teeth, the between gap and I have to floss at twice everyday, instead of every 2 times per week.

Do you have any experience about crown?

For me, I use white filling and my dentist office don't have silver filling anymore, so dentist said white and silver filling will break. My mother had a lot of silver filling and many of them got broke so she got crown in early 80's.

I have two crowns. I have them due to old silver fillings from childhood that the tooth broke around.

I had most of my molars filled in childhood because they had pits. This was 30 years outmoded when an elderly dentist did it to me, and it has caused quite a few problems.

Now they just paint fluoride on teeth like those and know it is a normal occurrence.

I had few silver filling on baby teeth and all of them got pulled out, so last one went out in 1999. I had 2 severe decayed baby teeth extracted and applied the sealants.

I have no silver filling on my teeth because many dentists stopped use silver filling anymore.

All my childhood fillings were silver. I still have all of them except for one tooth that broke in half. That one required a crown, which is white. All my recent fillings have been white.

I floss each time that I brush. My dental hygienist says, "Ah, I can tell that you floss. You have the least amount of plaque I've ever seen."

As an older person, receding gums and shallow roots are my problem. :(

Never had a crown, but I went in two weeks ago for filling and they hit a nerve in my tongue. It now feels life I've burned it with coffee. I was supposed to go in for another filling this week, but I will not go until I get all feeling back in the right side of my tongue. I'm probably doing to see my primary care instead.

OP, sounds like a lot of work getting done.

yep, four crowns, and they all are dental porcelains. I try not to mess up with my teeth as they are way too expensive.

It is best to floss first then brush your teeth, that way you brush off any food or plaque you moved around flossing.

I had my tooth pulled as I did not want go through all the pain having a crown put in . I only had one tooth pulled out and I have the rest of my teeth.

I had to get a crown in December, not quite a MacBook, but close! My mouth is still adjusting to the change. Also getting some old fillings replaced; I don't know what they call the polymer stuff they do now. He puts in little dabs and shoots it with a light/heat gun. It was expensive, too.

I had a filling put in 2 years ago and a cavity developed under it. It broke and I ignored it since I was in no pain. Woke up a few weeks ago to a sharp throbbing pain. Ended up in the ER. It became abcessed and it being the New Year holidays the dentist were closed! ER prescribed me antibiotics and tramadol. I was miserable and clove oil did provide some relief but not much. Wednesday morning after NY day I sat and watched the clock for 9am. "Denist opens at 9" I called! I got in at 1030am. They offered me to have a root canal and a crown. I said no. I dont want to keep a dead nasty tooth in my mouth. The other option was to have it pulled. So I decided to part ways with it and have a bridge later.

I've had two crowns put in on one side on my molars. They are zirconium crowns, not the silver amalgam ones (mercury toxicity concerns). If you wear retainers post-braces, be prepared to travel from the dentist to the orthodontist and back until things fit right. Pain in the rear. I also have only composite fillings, no metal ones.

I must be doing something right. All the hygienists and dentists praise my super clean teeth. :D

And all my dentists praise my super clean teeths . I joke about leaving my teeth to my dentist because he keep telling I have great teeth. When I was younger some people thought I had false teeth because they where so white a perfect. One woman asked me to take my teeth out.

Foxrac, it's a good thing you posted... I'll definitely remember next time if I have a dental plan for my teeth.

Wow! I'd say both were at fault! The dentist SHOULD have explained the situation to the mother and give her the option between silver and white crowns before assuming to go on with the procedure.

But ultimately, the mother is responsible, the girl is only 4 years old and has to go through THAT much dental work? *sighs shakes head*

What saddens me the most about this article is the girl has to go through this not once but twice.

Yup, I didn't have first cavity until 1994 when I was 6 years old.

My first dental work was terrible because I had to suck the numb pop before they injected the numb into gum, so they removed the cavity and filled with ugly silver.

Foxrac - why are your teeth decaying? are you eating a lot of candy or drinking acidic stuff like sodas? not enough vitamins and protein? do you brush your teeth regularly?
