few weeks back my area was put on fiber optic,we were all told how wonderful it is how fast, and cost not cheap....since getting it my two computer so slow difficult load up can take up to and longer than 10mins get on net..i thought it was me but it seems everyone in my area have same problem....i use BT who have said it not possible F/O never breaks down If i and the rest of town got problems then it us not BT.
grateful advice please

Caz12, do you mean that you have fiber optic installed and it is still not fast enough?

It probably bottlenecked up in your neighborhood - being bottlenecked usually cause internet connect being slow. Since metalangel said he worked for BT and their products are "terrible and garbage" which is likely culprit.

Fiber-optic technology is much better and faster. Maybe it's not 100% fiber-optic like FiOS. Maybe it's like ATT which has fiber-optic routed to a service center only, not to your home. That sucks. However if it's completely routed to her home, it should work ok. If she doesn't have fiber-optic yet, then WTF am I talking about?

so? who cares about fiber optics? take a look at docsis 3.0 with 4 channels ..:D

yes had fiber optics installed bt infinity...never thought about forum thanks i give it a go
docsis never heard about it but will look into it...
it not only me with fiber optic problem it most of area..it easier gouging me eyes out and less painfull than bt, about ten or more have tried, you know what bt like neighbours phone up get india who not a clue promis to get back and never do

Before I left the UK I remember them opening the telephone exchange box to install their fibre optic crap and when they were done they put a big "BT Infinity Fibre Optic is now in your area" sticker on it. I had a lot of leaflets through my door offering me free trial periods and cheap for 12 months and I threw them all in the recycling bin and stuck with my ADSL.

When I worked for BT it was about ten years ago. The satellite product I supported was something they'd bought in from a company in Germany so any problems involved calling Germany and then waiting to hear back from them regarding a solution! The customers were generally in isolated areas like the Scottish Highlands and so any problems meant they had no service at all. Not good. BT was once the only phone company in the UK and they still have the attitude of being a monopoly.

caz, if you haven't already, ask on that forum to see if anyone's had a similar problem in the past and if they fixed it.

There are several things at work here and you've pointed out two separate issues, speed of internet and speed of computer boot up.

The first issue of faster internet depends on several different things, your provider, your modem and your network card. Your provider first has to send you data at a faster speed they do this either at your modem, the source or both since thing has to communicate at the same speed. Your modem also needs to be a Gigabyte modem and you need to tell you provider. Your computer card also need to be able to handle a 1gig connection. If you have a 10/100, card it won't work. You need a 10/100/1000 card for it to work. If you are using wireless, you need a wireless N card for it to work. Your graphics card can also impact performance as well, if you are watching video. If all these things are in place you should have faster internet speed.

As far as computer boot up, again, computer hardware such as ram and cpu affect this. In addition, you could use a solid state drive instead of a regular hard drive. If you can't expand any of this, it's probably time for a new comp.

metalangle and vacation guy you both right...bt put a box at end of street and my neighbourhood use it the f.optic come from that to a hub and a wireless in house,bt guy said be to expensive to replace everything and this is as near as they will go.if i being clear...you know sort of thing metalangle, the green box in streets that are locked when opened there wires

Naturally, any old computers are not made to work with newer technologies.

Caz, from what you and then Vacationguy have said regarding slow boot up, you'd do well to do Disk Cleanup and then Disk Defragmenter. My gf had an old PC given to her by her parents that likewise suffered very very long boot times when first turned on and going through these procedures helped a lot.

On most versions of Windows if you go Start Menu -> Accessories -> System Tools you'll see both of them. Run Disk Cleanup which might find a lot of old redundant temporary files. Then run Disk Defragmenter (and choose to Defragment drive C:, NOT just Analyze) which takes all the chunks of data on your hard drive and arranges them efficiently again - think of it as taking a messy filing cabinet and putting everything back into alphabetical order again, stuff is much faster to find that way.

Defragmenting can take many many hours (sometimes a day or two!) and you need to be patient and let it run!

As for BT and the telephone exchange box: no, the wires running into your house aren't going to be fibre optics themselves but that shouldn't make too much difference considering the box is only at the end of your street.

This is an article from June which seems to describe the same problem you're having. It doesn't offer a solution but they have been very thorough in eliminating everything but BT as the source of the problem:

First of all, her PC needs to meet their (BT) minimum requirements. If it doesn't, then it's time for her to upgrade her PC or buy a new one as VG234 recommended. If it meets the requirements and it's still slow, she has to clean up her hard drive as you recommended. If it's still not working, switch to another provider as the link you posted shows that BT sucks.

Example for Verizon FiOS:

Verify your computer meets the minimum system requirements

Minimum system requirements PC
  • 800 MHz Processor
  • Windows 7, Vista, XP (Service Pack 2), Windows 2000
  • 512 MB RAM
  • DVD-ROM
  • 10/100 NIC Ethernet Card
(For speeds over 100M a customer will need to have a 10/100/1000 NIC Card)
  • 1 available USB 1.1 or USB 2.0 port
Recommended system requirements PC
  • 1.2 GHz Processor
  • Windows 7, Vista, XP (Service Pack 2), Windows 2000
  • 1 GB RAM
  • DVD-ROM
  • Supports 100Mbps Ethernet Card
  • 1 available USB 1.1 or USB 2.0 port
Minimum system requirements Mac
  • OS 10.3.9 or higher
    • 2 GHz Processor
    • 2 GB RAM
    • CD-ROM DVD
    • Supports 100Mbps Ethernet Card
    • 1 available USB 1.1 or USB 2.0 port
  • OS 10.1 or higher
    • 233 MHz
    • 128 MB
    • CD-ROM DVD
    • 10/100 NIC Ethernet Card
(For speeds over 100M a customer will need to have a 10/100/1000 NIC Card)
    • 1 available USB 1.1 or USB 2.0 port
I suggest that it meets recommended requirements for better performance.
