Does anybody know how to best connect -it is POSSIBLE at all ?? - the TV LG LCD CS57
HDMI 1080 p
120Hz
which can be connected two way - either thru a regular TV cable coaxial

in which case the CC appears, but the picture quality is horrible,

or thru the HDMI cable

which, unfortunately, HAS TO link from the cable top box (or 'PPVR') to TV and probably b/c of that? this way picture is excellent,
but there is no CC.
(not the exact box I have)

I figure this is because if the coaxial cable is not on,
simply only the top box is transmitting the signal,
and since the box doesn't have the CC decoder, then it is not transmitted - am I right?

Is there a way to fix this glitch? Or this TV is not the best product for us CC users?

Only way you can get captioning through HDMI is to turn on CC in cable box. If it doesn't have it, I would go back to cable company and ask them for another one that does have CC decoder.

Wirelessly posted (Blackberry Bold )

HDMI doesn't (in most cases) support CC at all ... New legislation has been past to fix this issue, but it doesn't come into effect until 2013 &'14.

HDMI has nothing to do with CC. HDMI only transfers pictures/videos from a device to the TV. There is legislation that was enacted in 1995 requiring all TVs to have a CC decoder built in them.

That is incorrect, HDMI strips the line that contains CC information which is why you don't see CC on HDMI connections.

In order to view CC with HDMI connection, it has to be decoded before being sent through HDMI.

Also that 1995 law was only for connections that was used at the time which is over the air and cable connection. I once got a TV that had DVD player built in and it wouldn't decode CC from DVD. I complained and they told me that there was nothing they could do under the law at the time. I had to get an RF converter and DVD player in order to view CC on DVD in the same tv even tho the DVD player was included.

It's pointless now. Almost all boxes with built-in CC. We use HDMI since 2005 and no problem with CC. It's stupid to fight law for change law to add CC on HDMI connections since boxes already have built-in cc as itself.

Uhhh,, you may want to reread what I said cause you apparently didn't get what I was saying

Secretblend is correct.

Audiofuzzy, if your STB (set-top box) is HD-capable and has no built-in CC decoder as you said, you should replace it with a different model. What cable company services you and what model number of the STB do you have now? Of course, HDMI is the best. RF and composite video (yellow RCA) connections suck.

Once you turn CC on in your STB, you will be watching your HDTV via HDMI with a big smile.

The best solution is that all STBs/BD/DVD players with HDMI connections must include a CC decoder. That's what FCC will enforce starting in 2014 (hopefully earlier).

Also FCC requests HDMI's design to be modified but HDMI's inventors already explained to FCC that it's designed that way so it can't be modified or redesigned. Now FCC knows that so that's why FCC made a request only (not enforce it).

Yup, you are correct.

It was in 1993 that required all TV to have CC decoder built in, result in ADA law, not 1995.

Speaking of DVD player, you can get CC if you use composite cable or S-Video but won't work on component cable and HDMI, unless DVD player has CC decoder built in.

Hello Audiofuzzy,

I know about Tivo (HD model) has CC decoder built-in and if you subscribe to cable so you can use cable card to receive channels.

All Directv receivers (HD model only) has CC decoder built-in.

If your cable receiver has no CC decoder built-in so call cable company or take to their office for replacement, if no luck so you can look for Tivo or other receivers that support CC decoder built-in.

Or just use SDH (English Subtitle for Deaf/Hard of hearing) on DVD regardless what cables to use.

I just thought I'd add that I'm in Canada - so the availability of HDMI CC compatible decoding cable boxes may be different here.

Some people forget that not everyone is from the USA on this board ;)

Yup, nearly all blu-ray movies have SDH and it has been since released in 2006.

Some DVD movies only support CC from TV signal, usually old movies.

Good News: Canada has Tivo now. :)

Thank you everyone for your replies so very much - I learned a lot.

yes, I am from Canada and my cable supplier and STB is Telus - after I posted this and went to the living room and checked I was sheepish to realise I do
have the same STB as in the picture, lolol

It doesn't have CC, so we most certainly will call Telus and ask if they have one with CC. Since they have better ones, where you can record more movies at once and view other channels while recording and other options, chances are the CC is there as well :fingersx:
We will ask about Tivo, too, thx.

Today's Sunday, probably their office is closed by now, but I'll let you know tomorrow.

I am really unhappy with our old TV breaking down. I am thinking maybe it's better to spent up to 500$ and fix the damn thing - 36' digital Sony, huge beast, but at least it had an excellent picture. no HD but in HD it had slightly better quality and man,
all the pictures was so crystal clear! The size just right for our family room,
the only problem is there is this one part that probably was faulty from the start, when it cames lose the picture start snowing, if you bang the TV it fixes for awhile. the only irritating thing about it.

CC was there, what else do I need?!

We found out it can be expensive to fix as this TV is most likely discontinued, but, eh.. seeing how many problems there is with this hullabaloo HD LCD LED Plasma and else crap, I wonder if we weren't better off before ???

They will be fooling you in the store with gorgeous vision that is coming from HD blue-rays, you are taken in, then you come home, plug the live TV and only then you see what in fact technological truly piece of crap you bought...

Maybe you guys in USA are more advanced than we here in Canada (probably most definitely), but here not even half the channels are in HD, so what's the point lolol

Yeah, you can tell I am in the good mood today, lol
sorry guys..

and thank you again :ty:

Audiofuzzy, Your cable converter includes Component Video (Y/PB/PR) ports?
It can work with CC.

Fuzzy

You could use composite, S-Video or RF cable for now to receive CC from TV signal.
