Government blocks fuel efficient cars...70 mpg

I think you don't like little cute car with efficient fuel.

Not surprised about this car got higher emission than US standard, however I don't think it has with Obama Admin, it is more likely to be regulation that approved by the congress or state law in California.

somebody's got a lil' too much time on his hands.... and lot of hot air

As Foxrac said, there are lots of rules and regulations cars must meet, i doubt its a governments conspiricy

This has been happening for many, many years now. And yes I do believe that it is a conspiracy between the government, the auto makers in the US and the oil companies! I was told that Chevrolet had the ability in the 50s with a special carb to get 50-60 mpg on cars but the parts were kept secret then destroyed. Paid off by oil companies probably and maybe the government too. Yes, the government regulations are also due to the government being paid off in my opinion. The reason US cars don't last as long as Japanese cars is because the US manufacturers want you to come back to them for service ($) or to buy a new one! :2c:

2 reason I assume, they block:

1. Small mean risk for people's life.
2. Too slow, doesn't meet highway, more like for city only.

I agree it is a conspiracy. Anyone needing proof can come to Houston, specifically Pasadena, Tx. Here there are dozens of refineries and they stew out lord-knows-what into the air. Yes, there are regulations but the government is content to either not regulate or ignore the air quality test results. Going on now is a lawsuit by dozens of ordinary folks against BP, the same company that gave us the Gulf of Mexico mess.
People are getting sick through the release of seriously bad chemicals at a more-than-dangerous level into the air. Conspiracy between big oil and the government? Yes.

It looks like we have to expose the government, automakers and oil companies for their corruption.

Same goes with California because they have stricter emission regulation than federal so most cars make based on California standard.

Remember, you don't want regulation for oil companies but you want it now.

It looks like you are flopping.

You obviously have not seen the Smart Car nor Fiat on the road.

Volkswagen Passat Bluemotion 1.6 TDI is bigger than smart car and Fiat.

For me, I see some smart cars and Fiat cars on road.

Go back and find a post of mine where I said I'm against regulations. You won't find one. I'm all for exploration and drilling within the bounds of regulations. You must have mises the point where I posted: "the government is content to either not regulate or ignore air quality test results."

Its because they don't like Diesel, read carefully, it is for diesel vehicles. You see, it stand my claim that my old 85 Jetta Diesel reaches 60 MPG. I know Smart car diesel that can reach 91mpg you won't find one in United states, only in Canada and Europe. Reason they block is EPA! EPA don't like Diesel engines and that is why they are fighting to prevent more Diesel vehicles in the United States. Diesel Vehicle is very common in Europe.

In the UK, they used to determine cost of your annual "vehicle excise duty" (known as a tax disc which you display in the windshield) on the size of the engine. Now it's done by the amount of CO2 emissions.

A car with a diesel engine will emit a LOT less CO2 than the exact same car with a gasoline engine of equivalent power.

This change in the regulations also meant a lot of unexpected hikes in tax for people... my Celica, for example, emits LESS CO2 than my mother's hairdresser's Ford StreetKa and I therefore pay less than her!

My Skoda Octavia (related to the VW Jetta) got about 55mpg, but it would be 11 years old now so technology has moved on a long way since then.

It was also rumoured that the traffic light sequencing (the 'green wave') was deliberately set to force cars to stop and start... to burn more fuel... to pay more tax.

I think this is likely done in California as well...

Even though the sequencing on traffic light is fact, it was never intended to force stop to use more gas, actually the opposite is true. It was to force driver to maintain speed limits. If you go by speed limit you will get green light all the way. But if you go faster, you will reach red light. Maintaining speed limit actually saves gas.

Interesting. However, in the UK they have these:

Read more about them here. The first one is a fixed camera which are a common sight everywhere, the other two could be lurking ANYWHERE. Only the brave or foolish drive fast now around here. My missus' mother just got caught by one of the fixed ones doing 35mph in a 30 zone. Unlike a traffic cop, they enforce the letter of the law rather than the spirit of it. Going with the flow, clear conditions, empty roads, the camera doesn't care. Driving isn't fun any more.
