Good morning,

Way out of my league here. I am asking the experts hoping you can lend some clarity to what should be (to me) a simple question ? BTW, all the local shops just give me a blank stare on this one.

I have the house set up on a wireless router. Five computers, all are fine. Shop is aprox 300ft from the house. With the man door open, my laptop will work in the shop, closed it will not. Metal building, I get why it does not work. So, looking on the 'net, I see external usb wifi antenna's. They seem to be mostly for RV's. There are also what they are referring too as point to point antennas.

This seems like it should be simple, but I am not certain. I do not want to order something will not work for my application.

Any insight or am trying this the wrong way ?

Fear! We (and our laptops) could get thrown out of Starbucks?! - Tech Talk - CBS News <--- old news about greedy owners are not give you free wi-fi access unless you buy any item inside their shops.

Well, I use to tethering from Cellphone to laptop for emergency when my cable modern go down.

I warn you if your cellphone don't have unlimited data plan. it might charge you overpayment if you using tethering from your cellphone to laptop.

Someone (17 yrs old kid) borrowed his parent's cellphone using tethering to his laptop for downloading, chat, games, etc.. it charged over $2,000 bill. Parent shocked and blamed his son.

Few months later, Collection agents called them and harassing them for owe $2,000 bill. Parent's upset, refuse to pay bill and son's embarrassing.

If it's for yourself, honestly I'd see if there's a way to run a Cat6 cable and use a hardwired connection for your access in the shop.

Also consider moving the router so it's near a window closest to the shop ... That might increase the reception enough.

Ok, all of the above replies, THANK YOU.

Here it is as it stands today. Replaced my router, my old one was vintage, got an external antenna (indoor) for the computer, still a no go. I am going to get a longer USB cable and try some other locations for the antenna in and around the shop area.

I did try my cell, a droid razr, no success. I do have unlimitted data on my plan, too bad that did not work. Actually, if it pulled a signal in the shop I could use it alone in a pinch.

Part of my problem is that my office in the shop is at the far end from the house, this does not help things.

Here is something I am looking at. What do think ? Is this an avenue to pursue or a waste of money ?

Yeah, I am leaning that way very heavily. I need to get something external or bury it to the shop. I do need to put in new telemetry line to shop for the alarm, running shielded cable would I need to worry about cross feed if they are both in the same conduit ?

Once I am trenched, a second run would not be a problem, just more $

Well, Android device and Apple device does works tethering to laptop.

Nope. Just use 3/8 " of drill to make a hole thru the metal building then put the antenna thru the hole then put epoxy around. I did that before and it's works great between house's office router and warehouse like 100 feet away. Not worry about accident cut the ethernet from the tractor lawn. My customer don't complained about wireless for over 3 years so far.

That's one I used it for customer.

This where it is going to need go, outside the metal enclosure of the building. I have full signal outside the shop, and a good signal inside the shop with the door open, but zero signal when the door is closed. Applies to my cell also. I updated my router because it was older than dirt and figured I needed as solid a foundation as possible to start with. Windows are a good idea, but I only have one small one facing away from the house (signal)
 
This will not work. Ethernet cable has its limitation, and 300 feet is too long for sure.
