Bikers,

Have you ever ridden over "road snakes" that freaks you out?

What's that???

It's a snake of tars on road that seals road cracks

Those are the worst things you ever ride over it. Motorcycle hates it and it cause it to be skittish and slips or can drop if you tried to lean a turn! When road are wet, it's a worst nightmare for all riders!!

I went to City Hall and complained about road snake on main road near my home which are full of "road snakes". He said that City forgot to tell contractor to mix sand into tar to give it a grip. He know that because he's a rider himself too. He said that main road will be re-paved in next few years Aw SHEESH!!!

See the pic of road, You tell me how bad it was (scroll up and down to give you an idea)

The sad thing is that it's cheaper to "snake" road as opposed to overhaul the whole road. If a whole road was overhauled, then it would be closed for awhile. Not many cities can go with dealing with a road being closed for a long period of time.

Whoa those plenty of road snakes in KS. Not see anything similar here in California.

yeck. that's a lotta of snakes!

but yea common sense and MSF says that you shouldn't be leaning while turning if you see any kind of obstacle/debris/slick on that spot. and if you spot one, you just gotta slow down and turn safely.

this is not advisable but if it's really bothering you and if it's really unsafe, maybe you could take it into your own hands like using a butane torch to warm up the tar and throw some sand on it.

we don't have that many road snakes in here but my biggest concerns around here is road paints and inattentive drivers. in NYC - I don't dare to lean while cornering. there's just about too many things that can happen - pedestrian, oil slick, hidden sand/gravel/similar, nasty potholes, bicyclists, etc. etc.

An hour ago, I nearly got in accident. typical left-hanger (that's when a driver blindly turn left to intersection without checking his left side). oh well... I get at least 20 close calls in just one hour in NYC  and last Friday on NJ highway, I was nearly sandwiched by a driver changing lane onto me and nearly slammed me against concrete barrier. worst part? he didn't even notice at all and kept on going and I was literally at his side. oh well.

perhaps I should start recording my ride so that you can see what I deal with on daily basis in NYC

Yes, I don't lean where road snakes, pebbles, sands or anything loose on road. I usually slow down to minimuim and turn carefully with little leaning. I am fully aware that some Cities tried to save money by sealing road cracks to make it last a bit longer until they have money to repave it.

It be nice if I can steal a machine that use flame to heat wide width of road and have other spread out sand then wait an hour then have Street Sweeper to sweep and suck up sands, all left are road snakes been filled with sand and sealed. It can be done overnight when traffic at nil.

The reason why Monticello road have lot of road snakes because the road was paved 6 years ago and Kansas have clay soil underneath it. Over the time, rain and drought cause soil to expand and shrink and settles causing road to crack up alot. If they had placed rebar and poured aerated cement over it then pave it with blacktop asphalt like they did on I-435 (Kansas Side), road tend to last very long time and very little road cracks would happened. I don't think City would be able to afford that type of method.

City of Olathe, ks was the worst city ever because they spray hot tar over the road then dump truck dump red pebbles and workmen spread pebbles over hot tar. It's exactly like recently made soft cake icing then spread colored candied little ball over it and spread it then let icing hardened, candies still rolls off when you rub it off... City use that as a cheapest way to repave road.. It's very dangerous for motorcyclist, moped rider, and bicyclist alike. If you lean just a hair of it at 25 - 30 mph, you'll dropped real quick and hard (you'll literally fly before land on pavement. I have scar on my knee from moped accident on tar/pebbled road in Olathe. It tore my jean and scarred my knee. It was painful for a while and had to pluck off pebbles stuck under my skin! My knee was covered with dried blood while I was riding on the way back home 15 miles away. :eek2: Right now, it seem that they no longer using Tar/pebble method and assuming that there were high accidents happened and lawsuit been hit.

Most of the areas in my city aren't bad, few road snakes out there not comparing to one just close to my home.

It be nice if they develop something better than road snake. I've seen them tried pouring cement or chaulking sealer over road cracks but seem short lived and costly.

:eek3:

if they're really tight on money, then they should just stick with this

Then all cruiser motorcycles would need a knobby tires in place of road tires

Seriously, there are some cities tore out road and pour white asphalt over dirt road to save money. Mostly small towns that have lost half of its population in Rural Kansas and cannot afford to repave blacktops.. I recalled they used to have paved road and now they don't...

I rode my cruiser motorcycle on that road like this picture, it's not too bad as long as you don't lean far enough to cause it to slip or drop. But the bad part if it's rained and muddy on that road, cruiser motorcycle sucked on that and it's hard to control on muddy road.

not exactly like that in the pix but similar. a very economical approach. I think it's a mix of sand and gravel so that it doesn't turn into muddy road but yea there will be dusty issue.

Sometime sand and gravel was rutted, exposing dirts and when it rains, it can be messy.

I'm used to dust billowing behind my truck or car. The only thing is that you cannot floor your car or rev up throttle on motorcycle over 50mph or else tires will "dance" with gravel road (tires lose traction at that speed), :eek2:

My friends and I did 70mph on gravel road, it was darn scary cuz car was weaving and ready to spin out. Not worth it.

It'll be great speed inhibitor so small towns don't have to hire cops to catch speeders

just like that scary road in West Virginia I drove on to ski resort where the speed limit is 55 mph and there were almost no cops at all but lack of cop appearance isn't big deal to watch for reckless/drunk drivers because the road hazard will take care of it

the road has steep embankment on both sides and lotsa of trees so if you were either distracted or drunk.... :bye:

it's almost like this -
