'Deaf people can do things' | Sheboygan Press | sheboyganpress.com
There's a startling "before-and-after" quality to the projects done by Jeff Mauer, owner of 72 Handyman, Sheboygan Falls.
Take the kitchen remodel Mauer did for Brad Schoenemann and Tina Weiterman's Oostburg home.
The "before" shots of the kitchen show dark cabinets with dated trim and poorly made drawers. Old countertops and faded linoleum made the atmosphere even drearier.
Enter Mauer, aided by crew member Kurt Granberg, and over the space of a few months, they transformed the room, installing cabinets in rich maple, a countertop that harmonizes perfectly with its surroundings, and laminate floors in a honeyed glaze, the "after" photos displaying a fresh, modern feel.
"We love it," Schoenemann said. "We'll definitely have him come back."
When Mauer saw Schoenemann's words, signed by an American Sign Language interpreter, his face lit up with a big grin.
Mauer, deaf since age 4, started 72 Handyman after spending many years learning the tricks of the trade from his father, Joe Mauer, in the Sheboygan Falls home he grew up in.
