Hello all,
As you can see I am new to the forum. I am a student at UC Santa Cruz and also the co-leader of a development group which has been working on an idea we have for an assistive device for hearing impaired/deaf individuals. I joined the forum in hopes of receiving feedback on our idea before things go further. To guide us in the early phase of our endeavors, we created a quick survey which explains what we are working on and asks a few questions. The survey is really short, and we would love to hear from as many people as possible. The link is:
Survey1

As you can see the survey is anonymous. If you have any questions or comments feel free to respond, PM me, or email me at btherber@ucsc.edu

Thank you for your time and I hope to read your feedback soon.

Why is it no one ever bothers to ask the deaf BEFORE they begin inventing devices to help them?

It doesn't sound like anything that hasn't been done before, in one way or another.

If you don't want to read the survey, they're talking about software that'll allow a person's voice to be translated into text and displayed via projector, so a "higher number of deaf individuals can attend classes, presentations etc. without the need for a human translator."

And if the deaf want to respond? What then?

Sounds like an extended version of Dragon Diction.

Same survey as so many others are doing. I agree with Jillio, we should be asked about what WE'D like.

Bingo. Instead of just 'inventing' all these weird kooky devices (many of which have already been invented or they are not necessary), these so-called researchers need to go the Deaf community and ask them, what type of device would you like to see that would be beneficial to you and your community?

Oooh, oooh, I know! Let's make up a language with our hands so the deaf peoples can understand us better!

In all honesty, I wouldn't be surprised.

That's what I thought but it also reminded me of Dragon Diction.

Why not invent something that would be an effective improvement on current technology?

They obviously haven't done enough research to know what current technology is. How would you improve on current technology?

Well, I am told that weather radios do have an accessory for the deaf and HOH that it is a strobe attachment so when the radio goes off it flashes to get your attention, but from the few weather radios I've seen, none of them have a readout of the warnings being given which makes even the strobe useless. In a situation like that I would like to have a radio that gives an on-screen readout of the warnings being issued and what locations are affected. Or heck maybe have an automated text sent out when a tornado warning is issued instead of putting officers lives in danger having to go each deaf and HOH individuals house to warn them. Because it would come from 911 services a person would not be billed for the text and it would work even if the phone is shut off the same way a phone that is inactive can still dial 911. Maybe? Just a thought.

We, deaf/Deaf people, need to start inventing devices to help us. That way we can get rich off of ourselves! I am also guilty of not trying to be an inventor.

Hmm, well if this text thing isn't implemented anywhere yet where it originates from 911 services and is sent went the tornado sirens go off instead of needing a smart phone with a weather app to get the warnings. Maybe I can bring this up with the police chief in my tiny town and see what he thinks? I know it wouldnt be just beneficial for the d/hh but also for hearing people as well. Anyone with a mobile phone would be allowed to sign up for it through their local 911 office or sheriff department or city police department.

Dixie, let me get you the name of this weather alert thing we have at work. They bought it just for me. I am not 100% sure how it grabs the info, whether it's plugged into the phone line or through satellite (like cell phones), but every time there is a tornado watch or warning, or severe weather alert, it starts flashing and beeps (it's LOUD!) and then you can read on the screen what's going on outside. I don't think it's connected to 911 so that part probably doesn't help, but it does notify you of severe weather. There's no cost to this except to buy the thingy.

For some reason, that is making me conjure an image of the male anatomy! :giggle:

Ok the 'thingy' lmbo!!! Yeah, I would love to see what alert system this is.
