Deaf Envy?

Hi, I'm new to the forum. I thought I'd post. I've been thinking about something lately. I'm hearing, and I've felt like I want to be Deaf.

That sounds SO strange, I know. However, before I learned about ASL or Deaf culture, I always felt sort of out of place. After finding ASL....I feel so different. I found something that makes sense. All my teachers have said, in different ways, for a lot of Deaf people who grew up talking, when they learn ASL it's like a light comes on and they understand. That's pretty much how I feel. I love the culture, the traditions, the candidness. The personality and tendencies all grow up are very similar to that of Deaf Culture. :)

I'm in school to become and interpreter. I have two semesters left and I will have a degree in interpreting and will start interpreting in Texas.

My problem is I have no idea where to find Deaf people my age to hang out with.:-( Anyway, I just thought I'd share that. I felt like it was a weird thought. I'm curious as to what ya'll think?

Some deaf people wish they were hearing. what if a hearing person wishes they were Deaf? Strange, I know.
 
That's a way of escaping from what is wrong by trying to join a new culture. It's like moving from place to place to run from your problems.

It's important to find out why you felt out of place where you were in the first place.

After you establish in the deaf community, your old problems will come back. Deaf people are just like anybody else.

I don't have problems with being hearing or things I want to escape from. I just there's less explanation needed when it comes to communication with a Deaf person. I don't have to explain why I feel the way I feel..or apologize because i said too much. I know there are sensitive or jerky people in any culture. My experience is limited to a few hundred Deaf people. I know Deaf people are not all the same. I just find I gel a little easier. It would be similar to a white person to black culture or a black person to white culture. If that makes sense.
 
I still agree with Bott. You are looking for an outside solution to fix an internal problem.

BTW, that isn't very respectful to Deaf people or their culture.:cool2:

You only know a few hundred deaf people and cannot find any your age to hang out with? Creepy.
