Bomb explosion and shooting in Norway

In this particular case Jillio, I have to agree that if anyone had been armed on that tiny island, the shooter would not have had uninhibited free reign to go on his shooting spree for an hour and a half.

Norwegians have always thought they were immune to terrorist attacks. Their security forces did not take the threat seriously .... ever. Their police often do not carry firearms. I am wondering if the officer that was killed on the island was armed? The one where Breivik got the uniform from.

I am sure this whole event will force theNorwegian government to review their current stance on terrorism.

so.... what happened with Jared Loughner? why wasn't he stopped especially in a gun state?

I'm hoping that Norwegian government will not get a knee-jerk reaction like us. I'm impressed that the country is not governed by fear and paranoia because of the fact that their police officers are not armed.

Their societal approach is very different from the approach in the U.S. I doubt that they will have a knee jerk reaction, or that they will even see this as a terrorist act. Therefore, there will be no paranoia associated with it as there would be here.

Thank God they are not bloodthirsty buggers like we are.

The suicide vest was invented by a Hindu fundamentalist group, no? Sort of ironic considering a lot of people think Muslims came up with the concept-- and considering the reason for the divide between India and Pakistan.

You got me curious. I checked it and found that Tamil Tigers are Marxists and secular although they do draw 80% people from Hindu families and the rest from those with different religions.

Northern Europe is not immune to terrorism: Voice of Russia

I think not. Sweden has seen such events, and there have been attempted terror attacks in Denmark. In Finland, there have been gun massacres at schools. This means that even Northern Europe is not immune to terrorism.

more on that here:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/wor...show-Norway-unprepared-for-terror-attack.html

Norway’s intelligence service had previously been criticised for its failure to keep track of suspected terror cells and the country was felt to be complacent about the prospect of a terror attack, secret cables from the WikiLeaks files reveal.

do you believe that Norwegians should enact something like Patriot Act?

No. I think Norway should remain an "open country" and not let acts of terrorism cause them to change who they are.

I am very sleepy and having a hard time trying to articulate how I feel about this. When the purpose of a terrorist is to cause a crippling effect on how a country governs, and the country then caves to this, then the terrorist has won.

The best revenge is to love fiercely, laugh often and ..... forgive.

oh? then I'm confused by your previous post.....

and I thought you said he was just a nutter? is he a terrorist or what? should we sit back and laugh or review their current stance on terrorism - whatever that means.

exactly what is their "current stance" on terrorism? why would they have a stance on it since they haven't had a terrorist attack in several decades?

You mean Kokonut? The first thing that popped in my mind was Koko the signing gorilla. How can she afford to buy all the tin foil??? :)

LOL, I often think of Kokonut as a non-signing gorilla!

No one said they are immune to terrorism. But this is not an act of terrorism. This is a lone individual acting out of a deranged mental state.

I don't see any link to any known terrorist groups in this case.. I think he's much like Timothy Mc Veigh in this respect.

I just want to be clear on what you posted.

Are you saying that neither the bombing in Oklahoma City, nor the attacks in Norway, were terrorist acts?

Or are you saying that they were terrorist acts but carried out by lone terrorists and not connected to any groups?
