Errr, I love the superiority of the deaf culture? I mean...I'm deaf, my kids won't necessarily be deaf, you do realize you are losing a 5th sense, which isn't a big deal, but it's not exactly a desirable element. It would be like saying, let's all become learning disabled and economically disadvantaged to convince ourselves we are superior.

I am 100% for deaf pride, and tolerance of it, and I have friends with learning disability, but as the phrase implies, it's a disability. I made that analogy that people would agree it's silly to just try emulate a certain group to show you support/appreciate them. My friends do not need to act deaf,or anything to let me know they support me. Signing in ASL? Sure, and that's pretty cool.

That's the problem with deafness, it's so invisible. That's why I am deliberately going voice off in public now, to make deafness more present and normal.
 
Is it so important to promote deafness? Overal I feel we have it the easiest in regards to disabilities, and ASL is cool, however I know I'd get a blank stare and nothing to eat if I did that. the same is true if I spoke english in many areas here....I need to speak spanish since there are mexican workers in little russia and china town (idk chinese..) or I'll speak hebrew, :P

I think it's more important not to hide it.
 
I agree, it's important not to hide it...however, I don't see it as a big deal.Just like i don't wake up every morning thinking, I'm white, I'm dutch, I must show the world...

I just don't...I'm deaf, and that's about it?

We need to show it more and more so that the hearing world will understand us better. It's all due to people not understand and they can't necessarily see it. Yes, HA's and CI's are visible, but for those of us who don't use them, hearing loss is invisible and it's harder for those of us who still speak.

So, I feel, that we need to push and make it a big deal so more and more of the hearing world learns and can better understand where we are coming from and not continuously giving us a hassle or their opinions to better conform to their world.
 
That's how it should be. That we're deaf, so what? We shouldn't be compelled to meet on hearing people's terms because they don't want to meet us halfway.


My father, who is Polish, when he entered External Affairs back in the late 60s, the government asked him to change his last name to something sounding English or French because his name sounded too "foreign". My father said no. He's proud of his Polish heritage and he'll be damned if anyone tells him he can't be.

I've always admired him for that fand it inspired me to be proud of being who I am and not let anyone try to change me to suit their ideologies.

How did a white dutch person wind up a member of Holocaust survivors?

My Jewish friends told me they are of Middle Eastern extraction. Neither white nor European.

[In 1941,] German authorities and their Dutch collaborators segregated Jews from the general Dutch population, and incarcerated 15,000 Jews in German-administered forced-labor camps. The Germans then ordered the concentration of Jews in Amsterdam and sent foreign and stateless Jews to the Westerbork transit camp in the northeast part of the country. Some of the remaining provincial Jews were sent to the Vught camp. As of April 29, 1942, Jews were required to wear a yellow Star of David on their clothing.
Deportations of Jews from the Netherlands began in the summer of 1942. The last train left Westerbork for Auschwitz on September 3, 1944. During these two years, the Germans and their Dutch collaborators deported 107,000 Jews, mostly to Auschwitz and Sobibor, where they were murdered. Only 5,200 survived. In addition, 25,000-30,000 Jews went into hiding, assisted by the Dutch underground. Two-thirds of Dutch Jews in hiding managed to survive.
The geography of the Netherlands made escape difficult. The ruthless efficiency of the German administration and the willing cooperation of Dutch administrators and policemen doomed the Jews of the Netherlands. Less than 25 percent of Dutch Jewry survived the Holocaust.

Nice to be able to entertain you so easily.

However you did miss a couple of things.

American Deaf Culture shares many things in common with a lot of hearing cultures.. In other parts of the world. Just not American hearing culture.

Another thing you missed is one tiny fact.

I'm a hearie.

And if you are really so dedicated to hearing culture you should remember that time is money. Time wasted is money lost. You should not be in here wasting this valuable commodity. You should get out there and get rich!

My dad's family is not Jewish either and they lost everything in literally one day, all the way down to a spare diaper for my dad, and my great grand parents froze to death on the streets while trying to escape to Russia - just a month before, they were millionaires. It's not just jews who were victimized. Gypsies, intellectuals, gays, deaf, disabled, and many many more were sent to the camps. My uncle who was Czech, his sister was sent to the camps. They're not Jewish either.

That's not accurate about the heritage of many Jews killed in WWII.

Plus I had a neighbor at one time who was a German Jehovah's witness who was the only survivor of her family. Not Jews, but victims of the Holocaust.
