Two girls sought to raise awareness of endangered orangutans. They learned that orangutan habitat in Southeast Asia is disappearing, partly because some rain forests have been cleared for palm oil plantations.

They don't want to sell Girl scout cookies with palm oil. Should change recipes to add canola oil for cookies.
 
yes, I've read a bit about this - the relatively new use of palm oil <in U.S.> in certain products and by itself for skin care and cooking has become so popular that it has affected that primate and there are also human rights concerns - here is article:

I guess there is an effort to see how the oil can be sustainably harvested.
 
Palm oil is in EVERYTHING. Greenpeace launched a huge campaign against Dove soap (made partly of palm oil), potato chips, everything. I'm really glad you're talking about this. More people need to know about these things.
 
Palm oil is a very common ingredient in a lot of cookies and food products. For instance, Nutella.

Very true. They expect the habitats to be gone within 10 years!!:(:jaw:
People need to be more aware about palm oil and it goes by several names!!
 
If any of you ever get a chance, watch the documentary: Born to be Wild, it's about orangutans orphaned by plantations and elephants orphaned by the illegal ivory trade. It's a wonderful film and very much age appropriate for kids - they leave out the gory details for their sake.
