Forget The Gas Tax; Driving Tax May Be Next

Bump everything to $7 a gallon and see what happens here.

In this nestle of a town I am in - almost everyone utilizes foot and public transportation. I'm on the bus daily.

I can attest to the fact that more and more people are using the bus. It's pretty cool

Fewer people are using the bus in St. Louis because the cost of a ride rose to $2.00 per person for a one-way trip, $2.75 for multitrip. In the old days, I would see entire families ride the bus, but no longer, and no wonder.

I have already cut my trips in the car due to the rising gas costs. It's just too boring at home, but after our house is built, I won't be quite as bored.

Because greater fuel economy is letting motorists drive more miles using less gas, the current gas tax that funds the federal government's efforts to build and maintain highways isn't generating enough money.
That is stupid logic. There are MORE cars on the road. Despite the increase of economy cars, more fuel is being consumed than in the past.

More taxes?

Bring me my shotgun, Agnes. I'm gon have a word with dem Warshintun folks.

I don't think it will pass. The only way to solve it is to increase the gas tax a bit more to cover the revenue losses.

The taxes here in the United States are lot lower compared to other socialist countries like in European Union. We spend too much on war, that is the BIG issue on budget.

Hmm, it went up to 2.25 a ride here.

It's cheaper to drive around a family tho.

Here in Jax, the JTA (Jacksonville Transit Authority) really sucks!...Read the article about it in the newspaper and saw it on the News....People always late to work...some having to catch several buses to reach their destination, plus, if there's any road construction, they will by-pass the bus stop.....Plus, there are many communities where the nearest bus stop is 2 miles away....

Depending upon a city bus to get you to work on time here in Jax......not gonna happen.

I feel bad for the bad systems. I remember it was that way when I lived in nebraska.

I was on the fringes of the bus systems and it was kinda annoying standing outside when it is 15 degrees outside for an hour. :giggle:

Just wait til somebody propose that we tax people for flatulence.

There was talk of trying to pass a flatulence tax on cows in my state! The farmers said it would really hurt them to have pay a tax on every cow! I have no heard any more about it !

There are many people, especially those who deliver goods and services in commercial vehicles, who cannot. Then, there are those of us who don't live on bus lines or have erratic work schedules.

I wouldn't mind a bus if it was available to me. Maybe I wouldn't have so many accidents that way. :giggle:

Seriously, I hate commuting but since I love working I have to do it.

It's about 7 miles to the closest bus stop from my house. :(

Same with Houston! And don't get me started about folks using the bus as a potty!

It's not that. I enjoy riding the bus. It's a lot less stressful.

Same here. One of my requirements if I move anywhere is that I have to stay on a bus line. No more dealing with rush hour traffic, I get to spend that half an hour commute each way reading, instead of getting frustrated at traffic, etc.

Hmm....welcome to Obama land. Not surprised one bit.

Go on back to your cave. We'll let you know when the scary Kenyan's all gone.

Yeah, it sucks that it's not available everywhere. I'd imagine it's a lot worse/more difficult when you're not right inside a city. I'm guessing your area doesn't have Park & Rides, either? (We've got those in the outer suburbs here, where you can drive and leave your car during the day, next to a big bus stop, so you only have to drive 1-2 miles, rather than the 10-15 miles it'd otherwise be to work.)
