This is a frightening situation in my area

See post #318. Despite all the mistakes you claim to have happened, and all the incompetence you claim by staff, this incident never deserved the sort of attention the media, and some individuals, chose to give it.

And now, it is over.
It's over and did anything bad happen?

Did anyone at the beginning know that it wouldn't turn bad? Is that why the staff didn't cooperate with the police? Somehow, they knew if they stalled the police, things would turn out better than if they had cooperated?

No. Things turned out OK despite the lack of cooperation by the staff. It could have very easily gone in another direction.

How did Parker get back to DC with only the $5 that residents are allowed to have? Was someone on the outside waiting for him to escape? Did he steal a car? We don't know for a fact that he didn't commit any crimes while he was out.

I guess the mental health staff is just not as capable as you are. Shame that those years of training are wasted on such incompetence.

Regarding cooperation and release of information...I guess you are going to have to address the governing agencies about changing the laws and the protocol. I'm sure they await input from someone like you.

Nope. It was all just a bunch of projection about less than probable things.
Well, it was the staff, after all, that first mentioned crime and violence. Should have the police just ignored that?

How do you know what kind of training, competence, and experience that staff has?

Because mental health staff are licensed, and I know what educational and liscensure requirements are.

But again, it really is a shame that we spend so much time in school, in internship, and training just to be so incompentent that a totally untrained individual is more capable of doing our job and following the laws specific to our profession than we are.

In an evening escape I am willing to bet it was PCT's and maybe one RN.

PCT? Professional counselor trainee? Still licensed. And at the end of their education. Locked facilities require a certain number of licensed staff to be on duty pro-rated to the number of patients currently housed. And, if an escape is suspected, senior staff on call is notified and comes to the facility. These matters are not left in the hands of untrained staff.

I meant patient care technician, like a nursing aid.

In a locked ward, the lowest would be a Qualified Mental Health Professional. Still trained, still certified. Not to mention which, even adminsitrative staff at an inpatient facility are trained in protocol for escape, or any other emergency that occurs when dealing with mentally ill patients.

Do you know what the staff at Palmetto is composed of, and who was on duty?

Is that because they're doing such a great job that there have been so many police calls, and runaways?

Does that mean the community should just roll over and say, "Oh, everything is just fine over there, nothing to worry about?"

The staff of the center are responsible for the residents in the center but the police are responsible for the safety of all the residents of the community.

They went missing about 6 p.m. on their way to the gym, the staff reported. I guess that would be evening shift.

Was it a locked ward?

I'm pretty sure the taxpayers in the south are not paying for it: D.C. is. The facilities in the south make a lot of money from the D.C. taxpayers, is how it really breaks down.
About $89,000 per year, per youth.

Oh well, I guess my best guess turned out to be right. He made a run for it back to DC.

Oh, and how did he possibly manage to do that? Isn't he mentally ill?

mentally ill doesn't imply helplessness and incompetence.

Mentally ill people can do all sorts of things that normal people do.
