brakes

Well I got under $9 for that. :ugh:

That's mean $200 more for extra 20 min? :giggle:

So $300 = $30 a hour for you?

20 minutes? I can do under 5 minutes for scan and reset. So that's mean special scan tool is awful slow.

If a service writer quote $300 labor for front brake pad slap in a 2006 MBZ CLS 55 AMG, I would finish the pad slap job in around one hour include reset the computer. My commission is 40%., I get $120 dollars in one hour. Easy money.
We charge a customer $ 59.95 dollars for a smog check. I smog about 10 vehicles a day, total $599.50, I take $ 239.80 (40% commission). Easy money. Sometime I made $500 a day but next day I made $50 day that the business always up and down.

It may be :topic: , What a coincidence!!! My motorcycle front brake does squeal loud too. I tried squeal stop spray, It didn't help much. Both little pads are about 80%. It have 10,500 miles on it..

I wonder if that cause by quality of brake pads or what?

Brake rotor on front wheel is still in original thickness and have normal "scouring" from sand, dust, dirts ect... Rotor is straight and no warp.

I could just buy two new cute little brake pads (semi metallic) type for it

What's your suggestions?

Catty

Maybe the brake pads suck and might want to try better ones?

You know me that I'm not a motorcycle mechanic but I think the brake noises that you describes is more like to have problems with thin rotors or harden pads or maybe need to adding shims on the back of the pads. Or heavy scored rotor surfaces? If I'm a hearing mechanic, would tell you anything. Sorry.

nothing. it's normal. as you said - your brake pads and rotor are fine. no problem.

Same story date back to 1970's, 1980's or 1990's. Have you been seen German vehicles like MBZ or BMW's bad deep wear on the rotor surfaces? German made brake pads are special frictions like black coal that can eat up the rotors fast. Often replace the rotors when the brake serviced. I love them but hate black dust around the calipers, the dust can mist you when impact the wheel lug nuts with air powered impact tool. I use soapy water to spray the wheels to prevent dust mist.

I thought the air blower gun is your better tool. Hmm.

The rust is worse than black dust for brake pad, bracket, rotor, bolt, and caliper after snow from here. Stop complained.

I never thought of that. LOL. I dont use an air gun to blow the dust off (at brake area) but my air impact tools does blow the dust

I remember watching a TV show about guys who blew the brake area clean with compressed air....many of them got cancer in lungs from breathing the dust.

It's true. Even clutch Disc, used oil, brake pad, coolant, etc. That's worse if mechanics are smoker *most of them don't have time to wash their hands and take smoke break*

That's why I always wear gloves and rare to use the air blower gun.

Right, I have about 25% of the brake works in my mechanic career, other 50% on smog inspections and engine performances (similar to driveability) includes failed emission repairs and electricial works, 25% on powertrains ( engines/transmissions/axles). I'm a good HVAC diagnostican.

OK the Rotor still thick, there's no "thinning" on inner rotor where brake pads sit on (I know what it look like, been replacing brake pads on cars and truck many times before). I would agree with you that pads maybe hardened because 2002 Suzuki Volusia had not been used much for last 9 years (1,000 miles per year) and It had 8,500 miles on it when I bought it. It probably that pads are old and hardened. I would go for new pads.

(Inhale dusts deeply) Hummmm smell and taste asbestos. Blow your nose on kleenx and check out your blackened snot. You'll get lung cancer in next 20 years.

I would avoid asbestos exposure by open garage door and have fan blow the direction away from my face.

I always wash with water to clean the brake dust off wheels and brakes since for a long time. You can see black stuff running off.

Dangerous. Todays brake pads or shoes are asbestos free. If my lungs get cancer then I will be happy gone. Bye AD.

I like to rinse the brake dust off wheels with water on outside of the service station but I can't do that because the black water on the spot that make the motorists eyesore while refuel their vehicles. No good idea, we keep the slab surfaces clean and looks professional service station. We mess up the bays after brake works, have the grave shift worker(cashier) take a care of it, he mops the bay floors every nights.

Yea, I know what you mean. I clean brake dust off on rental cars in wash bay.

I use non-chlorinated brake clean and it's work good. I can't remember what brand it was. Some of brand suck, some of brand work great.

Same here. Brand name is GUNK. I use them to clean brake drums/backing plates and wipe caliper pistons and contact points with clean shop rug soaked wet brake cleaner. Not worth to clean dust calipers, waste time and brake cleaner cans. For Brembo or exotic brake calipers, I wipe the dust off with clean shop rag soaked wet soap water because of paint powdered. At another gas station where this shop is high volume of services, they use a brake washer cart to washing brake parts such as dusty calipers, drums etc. My deaf mechanic works there. Me? No thanks too much stress works. Big money. I have easy works at Shell station and training my young deaf mechanic there.
