Alright now I just found an article that was written about an oral school that claims ASL itself costs $800,000 to teach a child.

Hearing parents who chose oral only for their child - would you ever use this stat???

Talk about an oral-method credibility dump on top of Graeme saying deaf schools cost north of 300k a year per student..

Wow! I never spent a cent for my kid to learn ASL.:hmm:

However, I did drop a bundle on things like speech therapy and hearing aids.:cool2:

I know.. It's just unreal.

heres the url to the pdf for the people running in here screaming bloody. i made the url redirect because it is not even worth mentioning the school's name here..

http://tinyurl.com/lameoralists

Thanks. I'll download the PDF and go over it with a fine tooth comb!:ty:

Added: just downloaded and glanced through the first page of the document. I already have smoke coming out of my ears. I think I need to go get a bottle of wine before I even attempt to read this BS. LOL

I think your comb will break because it's too full of shit

It's a pretty bizarre article overall, given the whole "prison of silence" concept (I kept thinking of the 'cone of silence' from Get Smart) and the opening gambit of terrorizing us with the threat of dying of deafness via train.

I have a healthy respect for the possibilities of many available approaches to communicating with and educating our deaf children -- including those that incorporate auditory-verbal and auditory-oral methodologies -- but this article is pretty offensive across the board.

That sort of incendiary tactic makes me disregard the whole argument whether or not the stats are on target (which I doubt: my daughter's tuition/transport at a private ASL school is a bit less than $100K a year, and even if that is subsidized a bit by the state/fed, it doesn't come near the $300K mark).

Yeah.. The prison of silence... WTF, man.

Glad to hear that I am not the only one think this article is pretty offensive.

Yeah, that jumped out at me right away. "Prison" implies that the deaf are being held in deafness against their will. When in fact, it is audism and the likes of the attitudes displayed in this article that have kept the deaf imprisoned for centuries.

Did the schools not provide speech therapy? I never had a speech therapist outside of school time (was pulled out of classes), so I assume mine was covered by the school district.

I posted this article on FB and said the lady is a bitch for saying that deafness is a prison of silence.

For the short time that he was in a mainstream while I worked on getting him transfered, they only had an itinerent SLP. She had never worked with even a single deaf child prior. I refused services on the grounds that she was unqualified to work with a deaf child. When we went to due process, the admin law judged ordered the school system to reimburse me 70% of what I had spent out of pocket.

That's good that you got reimbursed at least a portion of it!

I have read it and boy, this is a whole lot of shit in there. She was more into AGBell because this was her hometown. :(

I've barely started on this article and my blood pressure is already going thru the roof. I'll comment further when I read all of it.

As I read this article, I keep thinking of OB's Decision thread and my days in the mainstream. I wonder what sort of accomdations are being made for these kids if any?

When I was in mainstream, there were no terps and no note takers for me. I would see my resource teacher who worked with deaf kids once a week then in sixth grade, I would spend part of the day in the resource room and the rest of the day in the mainstream classroom. Oh yes, let's not forget speech therapy. :P I had that once a week. I had to see a tutor in the summer so that meant I had to work on school stuff. That's about all the support I got.

I just can't believe the audacity of some people, but then I remember they are everywhere. This is just pitiful on how she views the D/deaf. I understand how upsetting it was for the reigning Miss Deaf Teen or whoever to be killed for not paying attention. That's what it was. She should have been paying attention. For her to say that an Auditory Oral approach will help keep that from happening is stupid. Maybe they will make the students be more aware of their surroundings, but they will not gain "perfect" hearing. Maybe I am off base here, but she needs to get a life!
