I place $20 in a box.

So do you.

Now the box contains $40, and we both know it.

I sell the box to you for $30.

And we both walk away with a $10 profit.

But what we're missing is that one party has to part with $50 in order for this to happen, to get $40.
 
Box had $40..so both contributed $20 each.
She turned around, sold the box for $30...
she made a profit of $10 since all she contributed in the box was $20...
He gave her $30 for the box...and the box had $40 in it....
So after giving her $30 for the box, he made a profit of $10 since the box held $40 in it.

Hope I got that right....strange as it is!

How much did the gentleman put into the box?
How much did the gentleman pay for the box?
How much did the gentleman recieve when he obtained the box?

20 contributed + 30 paid - 40 in the box = 10 dollars for the joke...

ok here is the explanation: Person A put $20 in the box, Person B put $20 in the box. A sold to B for $30. A paid a total of $20 and got $30 back for a $10 profit. Person B paid $20 + $30 for a total of $50 and received $40 back for a loss of $10. Bang. Done.

sorry i just saw it here and i have been seeing this problem lately and nobody seems to understand it so i just had to say somethin
