republicans vote to end tax cuts

I think you got this wrong. Republicans blocked Democrat efforts to repeal the tax cuts already in place. They are voting as a block, not as individuals. Solidarity is working here. This is just the beginning of partisan blockage of almost any laws.

By the way, I noticed one Republican missed the vote for the $250,000 cut, but made his/her block vote for the $1,000,000 cut. Must have looked at their income and decided to cover their own tax cut.

Here is one part of the article that troubles me: "The Senate vote was expected to kick-start negotiations between Republicans and the White House for a bill to extend the tax cuts at all income levels."

What this tells me is that Republicans are offering a compromise to consider tax cuts for the rest of us. "Leave those wealthy folks alone, and we will consider a cut for the less wealthy." How exciting.

What's going on is that the republicans are holding the tax cuts for the middle class hostage, just like what SWK said. They will not allow any tax bill to pass unless they get what they want--a tax break for the wealthiest 1% of the nation--like spoiled little babies. Waaahhhh waaahhhhh!!!

Do we need to be reminded about how the democrats were willing to compromise (to a ridiculous extent) on healthcare?

Republicans don't give a damn about the middle class, and they are really showing their true colors. All of you who vote republican and aren't wealthy, you've been conned, and you have been for years.

The sad part is that Democrats don't care about middle class either. They are too busy helping the poor.

say what?!!? Democrats want to extend tax cuts for the middle class. Obama himself said that. It's not just he poor. They want the rich to lose its cut. It's that simple.

"Under the Obama plan, taxes will increase for families making more than $250,000.

Wrong. Actually, a family could make a lot more and still not face higher taxes. Obama wants to raise the top two brackets from 33 percent to 36 percent and from 35 percent to 39.6 percent. The first of the two – 36 percent – is widely assumed to kick in at $250,000. Obama says that himself.

But that's not right. The higher rate would apply to families with $232,000 or more of taxable income, or what's left after personal exemptions and deductions have been subtracted from income. Deductions can be sizable, especially for wealthy people. Think state and local taxes, mortgage interest and charitable contributions. The result is that a family making $300,000 or even more could have taxable income of less than $232,000.

"A lot of people making more than $250,000 won't be paying higher taxes," says Clint Stretch, a managing principal of Deloitte Tax."

Yep, nobody really cares about the middle class. That's why a hard rain's a-gonna fall pretty soon.

@netrox. If the dems really cared, they'd try harder.

Maybe if congressmen WERE members of the middle class they would.

Seems they are either protecting the fat cats, or taxing them and giving the tax money to the poor. The rest of us get overlooked.

Well, 39.6% is a pretty big chunk. Imagine those folks that make enough money to "qualify" for that 39.6% rate are mostly people that are more concerned about the bottom line than a lot of us. Are you willing to put in the effort required to become wealthy: college, long hours, making financial decisions that could doom you? They are, and that tells me they are going to know how to keep those dollars in their bank accounts, even if this means they leave the US, find loopholes, etc. Also, those people are the ones that are paying salaries to someone. I know I cannot afford to hire anybody, but they can. Geez, 39.6%??? No wonder they move to Bahamas!

BTW, there are less Liberal sources than Huffington. Just a FYI.

Yup, the middle class is shrinking.

Well said. It amazes me the number of middle income people that support Repub platforms. None of them will ever reach the income bracket where the Repubs can benefit them at all, but are in the income bracket where Repub policies hurt them.

It'd be nice to thaw out partisan "politics" between people; don't let the people in power dictate black and white to squeeze the middle class. We're in a recession (sort of; GDP indicators say not, but inflation is slowly creeping up against my state salary that was deducted/diverted quite a bit. Should've been a banker.).

I've been wondering that for years.
