Police: 3 Scammed Deaf, Elderly Woman Out Of $8K - News Story - WPXI Pittsburgh
Police have arrested two people accused of scamming and robbing an 80-year-old woman deaf woman in Unity Township.
Police said Sean Hurley, Roman Herin and Nicole Long went to 81-year-old Virginia Hodczak's home and offered to fix the roof. Police said the two suspects had fake business cards with the name “H&H Contracting.”
According to the criminal complaint, Hurley, Herin and Long told the victim their company would fix the roof but that they needed money for the materials. The suspects allegedly drove the victim to the bank, where she withdrew $8,100 from her account.
Police said Hurley and Long also told Hodczak they would seal her driveway and trim her bushes. However, the only work they did was snap off tree branches by hand and throw them in the grass, police said.
The victim is deaf and had to communicate with the suspects by writing notes, the complaint said. The victim's sister found the handwritten notes and looked at her bank statements before calling police.
Robert Kolbosky said he owns a business across the street from where Hodczak lives. He told Channel 11 News that he saw the men and woman working at her home.
"I saw two young men and a young lady and they were over at her place, but they were doing some work. They were resealing part of the driveway," said Kolbosky. "I did see her get in the car with the young lady driving and they did go someplace."
