What's with the new quote at the bottom? Are you saying you agree with that statement? That you have to hear nothing to be Deaf?

No. I just thought it was funny. I enjoyed the literal perspective .

I am just one of those poor mutts who can hear some, but not enough to be of use.

So the hearies don't want me, nor the deaf.

Just today I find it funny. Could be PTSD.

I didn't think so! It was so shocking that I had to ask! I read someone else say that they miss when the Deaf community was pure "deaf", but now there are hard of hearing and CI users...and they bemoaned that. So much for being inclusive

That's kind of typical of the old days.

Just when you think things change, the more they stay the same.

Oh stop! maybe you are wrong and everyone wants you.. :hmm:

I too saw that quote and wondered. Personally I think freckles has it wrong.

I don't have any manic tap dancing frog gif, or I would respond with that!

I read what freckles said in the other thread. I was :eek3: I have a hearing loss, yet I can hear some with my HAs. However, I guess, according to her, I am not deaf.

Maybe we could form an Alldeaf subset?

I say you are Deaf if you have 1 db of hearing loss and you wanna be Deaf.
that's the problem. people say the opposite of themselves.

if you saw/read the posts before that quote and after too, there's plenty to label yourself and if you can specific how your ear drums work (be it profoundly, half deaf, HOH, lipreading, HAs or HA, hear only loud noises/ environment stimulations, or can understand speech/phones, etc.) then great. that quote was an assumption of mine to a poster who didn't replied nicely.

it shouldn't be just "deaf" or "hearing", or/and "pure deaf" or "total hearing", "period". because that's not all we have in our dictionary.

it gets awfully confusing when people say "I'm deaf but I can hear." :dizzy:

so, you're basically saying the same thing what you quoted, you can't hear without HAs then. :eek3:

so here this goes --

deaf = can hear with HAs, can't without.

deaf = can't hear at all, even with HAs.
unless deaf in only one ear = HOH.

hearing = can hear without HAs, speak well.

unless bad hearing loss in one ear = HOH.
right? why so clueless about my quote ... :dunno: but thanks anyway. :)

Is that really what I said? Until you look at my audiogram, I don't think you should tell me whether I can hear with or without my HAs, and whether I'm deaf or not.

Wirelessly posted

When people say they're deaf, I assume they can hear some, however they need real-time support (ie. interpreters, oral translator, or CART) while sitting through an hour long lecture since it is seldom a deaf person is completely stone deaf.

Right on. It isn't for one person to decide for everyone else whether they're deaf or not.
