Aijalon Mahli Gomes Was Sentenced To 8 Years

SEOUL, South Korea -- A spokeswoman said North Korea has granted amnesty for a Boston man jailed in the communist country since January after former President Jimmy Carter worked to negotiate his freedom.

Carter Center spokeswoman Deanna Congileo said late Thursday that the former president will return to the U.S. with Aijalon Gomes. She said Gomes should be in Boston by Friday afternoon. North Korea news agency KCNA says Carter has left Pyongyang.

U.S. officials have billed Carter's trip as a private humanitarian visit to try to negotiate Gomes' release. Gomes was sentenced to eight years of hard labor in a North Korean prison for entering the country illegally from China.

Congileo said North Korean dictator Kim Jong Il granted the amnesty at Carter's request.

Great news and I'm impressed that Clinton and Carter visit to NK to released 3 Americans that had been sentenced to hard labor for enter illegally.

Carter has always been good at this kind of thing. He should have been doing it in1977-81 too though

North Korea used this and waited until Uncle Sam say "Uncle" before releasing this person. Why couldn't they release this person over the phone? Why did it take a person like Jimmy Carter to go over there in the first place? Was he already freed to go before Carter came over and he was only there to help bolster somebody else's image? I wonder.

Who could this be? Let me guess...

Carter was a great diplomat in foreign affairs, one of the best. He was not quite so good at domestic affairs.

I wonder why would you say such thing. didn't even post anything like "I'm happy Carter brought him back safely"

awful. just awful. :ugh:

No one knows the full details behind it all. Who really did the diplomatic work and if there was any diplomatic work to begin with. Maybe N.K. just wanted a way to get an American to come over there with the appearance of groveling? Maybe the guy was already freed before Carter got there. Who knows. Good thing he's back in one piece. Did they treat him well?

Bill Clinton got 2 journalists home from North Korea. everybody's happy.
Jim Carter got the Boston man home from North Korea. someone's brewing up some wild conspiracy theories.

I wish I can be as cool as Kim Jong-il.

I am jealous of the guy from Boston.
