My Next Computer Purchase...

Sound like you worry too much over HDD fail and use DVD for backup as you can.
worry too much? wouldn't you be if the projects in hdd can pay for your bills? it paid for my vacation and motorcycle hobby.

If you thought what I did was excessive, try asking professional photographers or graphic designers. They have at least 3 hdd (computer/laptop hdd, backup hdd, another backup hdd), DVD, and online server. I've advised them. I believe AlleyCat does this too.

I guess you never heard of RAID 1/RAID5 before.

The RAID 1 or RAID 5 are fault tolerance.
yes I have and my method was much cheaper.

Nothing too excessive about it. Better to be safe than sorry.

a very small price to pay. I got my 4+ hdd when it's on huge sale so it's like $40 for 750+gb hdd which is nothing compared to my client's payment for my work.

For live project - I do use a smaller HDD like 80gb with 5400 RPM for better reliability and stability. The bigger and faster hdd is, the shorter it will lasts. I've had 2 HDD failure and that killed me. :mad2:

Um, I am pretty familiar with RAID. However, I don't need them. In fact, you are making a bad recommendation.

Then you are so moron ever I know.

Back up 80GB of data in EHDD with RAID1/5 is bad recommendation?

Explain to how to fit a 80GB in one DVD? :aw:

Let me guess, backup 17 of DVDs *4.7GB* each from 80GB is good recommendation?

Care to explain why bad recommendation?

Same business? He back up on his DVDs and you back up on four or more hdd?

I don't buy it.

1. we're in marketing business.
2. we use our computers to do work for clients
3. the work is saved in our computers
4. we make back-ups for peace of mind

He burns his work to DVD so that he can give it to client... get it?
I don't burn my work to DVD because I'm a web programmer. I upload it to web hosting server. Even web hosting server can crash and lose everything... which is why I save it in my hdd... which I can use as reference in my portfolio for new clients.

um.... in our nature of business - our work is not 80gb big so the point is moot unless you're animator or movie editor (if that's what it's called).

Moron? Haha. That's a good one.

See, Real moron don't know how to answer my question. :aw:

let me answer this for you... which you should know enough not to even suggest it to us

:nono: to RAID especially for our needs. why?
1. it costs money. the cost of my method is a tiny fraction of RAID cost
2. RAID is not primarily designed for back-up purpose. It's NEVER really meant to be used for back-up purpose. RAID is typically used for server purpose.
3. technical complication and unnecessary headache because we are not IT technicians

1. Cheap = high risk and only $80-$120 different.
2. Umm. Just save a file to server or NAS or EHDD. Why should to save on computer's HDD. That's big RISK. What's happen if computer's mobo or HDD died and backup is too late. Same idea AD crash down and some data always gone. Backup was too late.
3. Are you kidding? EHDD RAID is not even complication. They are plug and ready to go. No IT technicians skill need.

For what it's worth, I am with Jiro on his backup methods. Matter of fact I purchased another harddrive for backup earlier this week. Can't go wrong with $30 500gb

that's why I have 4 hdd (and 2 laptop hdd for portability purpose). they're all external. :cool2:

show me EHDD product.

and ANYWAYS: This is about a computer purchase, not a friggin piracy or backup discussion.

:mad2:

...will be a netbook: the Asus Eee PC 1018PB-BK801.

[yt]ukcX1oWBeaA[/yt]

I will solely be using this computer for my writing and to surf @ WiFi Hotspots around town.

So is this netbook a good buy?

__

yes. if you have no problem with the keyboard size - you're good to go. do you have a budget constraint?

ZzZzzZzz... Thanks for bedtime storytellers without help AqueBabe's decide to buy any laptop for his dream come true. :laugh2:

How's about (alienware)M11x??, it is powerful netbook among the inferior netbooks on market. M11x is excellent for word process or video editing!

Just saw this thread. And Jiro you're very right about all the back-ups. I learned my lesson a long time ago and now I have several back-ups of computers and HDDs. It's worth the extra purchase for peace of mind, especially with all the multi-media so many of us do.

Well here is my new purchase: The Asus Eee Netbook 1080...also. an external cd drive by the same manufacture. I am 100% thrilled with my new computer. It's really awesome. In fact I am posting this reply via the Asus. Thanks for the advise guys!
