Courts Charge Mother of 555-Pound Boy

Yes that is why I want to talk to the chamber of commerce. Those guys are very political and would want all the credit for such a great idea, I don't care about getting credit - they can take all the credit for it as long as something good happens.

There are a lot of farms in this area, the farmers may be members of the chamber of commerce, if each farmer could donate land for a community garden that would be real nifty.

Can even set up a weekend program for those who work or don't have transportation (car pool).

A garden is supposed to supplement a diet, not replace what you are already eating.

Gardening provides better nutrition than store bought vegetables (if done right) as well as exercise.

I would recommend planting a lot of spaghetti squash.

I also noticed something this year. I bought a single packet of Roma Tomato seeds. That one packet got me over 50 individual Roma tomato plants. Each individual plant will grow over 50 tomatoes this season (yep, started them from seed and I already have tomatoes - the plant is about as tall as me and its been 3 months).

I discovered I had enough tomatoes to feed half of Cleveland ;) so I started giving tomato plants away. My mom has 8 of them in her yard now. I have friends that took some and followed my instructions as to where to plant them and how much water etc. and they have large tomato plants that are yielding delicious Roma tomatoes.

The seed packet cost me a buck fifty.

ah... that's the thing. "SUPPLEMENT". Supplement means something added to a whole.... which is a luxury that they do not have. :(

many of them live in cities.... the ghetto area...

rooftop gardens .... all kinds of places to grow veggies.

Hanging gardens are cool.

A little innovation can go a long way ......

Lattice and trellis work great on rooftops.

You can have a garden in the city. It's not that hard.

that's what I was thinking. the rooftop garden but then... looking at people living in those area (something like Detroit or Flint). It looks like they gave up on life long time ago :( but I still have faith. If there's a will, there's a way but it would make everybody's life easier if there was a sponsor.

People give up because they don't see help as being available to them. Make the help available, show them practical ways that they can improve their situation, and hope returns.

Yep. I think NYC is famous for it's rooftop gardens. I'm seriously considering trying my hand at container gardening next year.

Chicago, as well. In fact, they have a new city law that states that any new building built must have "green roof tops".

You mean like grass roofs, like for architect Chipperfield?

Or environmentally friendly?

community gardens normally only require a couple hours a week work to get veges and sometimes its carpool or some have a pickup/dropoff service

Like grass roofs, or other vegetation. Herb gardens, vegetable gardens, flower gardens, etc. all fulfill requirements I'm told.

Er... not really. When you calculate the hourly wages... it's not. When you start calculating how much of your time gardening could be used toward working at a job... you realize that home-grown vegetables and pork are actually expensive compared to those companies that factory-farm produces.

Problem is..

I don't know where the hell you guys are living that fresh produces is more expensive than junk food?

I agree too. You can't grow fruit and vegetable all year long on your own. You still have to buy produce from the store, it's generally cheaper. You need soil, water, all that stuff to start your own garden which won't be profitable for the first few years, pretty much.

if you were to grow your own vegetables, then buy store bought produce - you will immediately taste the difference. One of the reasons why is because most vegetables are picked before they are ripe so they can be transported (they ripen during transport). The fruit or vegetable does not get the *essential* nutrients that your body needs.

Home grown vegetables are a LOT yummier.

So ... your body craves things when it is not being fed right. The vegetables you eat from the store, do not have the essential nutrients in them that you need.

Soil depletion is a different problem altogether. Soil is where plants get their nutrients. Plants are where we get our nutrients. Most fruits and vegetables from the store, are picked before they ripen. That all equates to YOU not getting fed right. That also leads you to always crave fatty foods .... and cause obesity.

Buying organic or growing your own doesn't means anything if you either don't have the time for them or the disposable income for them. Even if you do things communally.

Sorry, but to many people, bills come first. Seems people forget that we live in a capitalist society. All these "they should've" and "they could've" are options that are really available to people who have the time and means to explore them.
