IRS agents visit small business and demand 4 cents that was owed

I remember that the IRS sent off a letter of notice to a couple in Indiana and they demanded them to pay one cent that they owed in income tax. The couple showed a letter to their congressman then he fired off a letter enclosed with one penny to IRS to consider it paid off.

Agreed!

It is no way for Obama to make this kind of order cuz he got many things especially Health Care Reform and War in Afghanistan as his top priorities.

I think it would be so ridiculous for any President to order IRS to demand a payment of 4 cent from a person or company.

I would say that is a true statement. I personally know of many people that don't know anything more about the workings of the tax system than the fact that money is withheld from their paycheck and they have to file a tax return every year.

Tax lawyers have a great deal of job security simply because people don't know how the system works, and need an attorney to represent them who does.
 
I am sorry, I do not believe this story, 4 cents" no way as I know IRS does round off to nearest dollar, so 4 cents, round to nearest dollar means zero dollar. IRS won't chase guys like that.

So, this story is just hogwash.

Does this mean that this would be more believable if they were trying to collect one dollar?
 
I don't believe that story. I don't believe IRS demanded 4 cents.

When you file tax returns, they NEVER take cents into account. You have to round the numbers.

If IRS actually demands 4 cents, then they will get sued.

Totally lame for kokonut to link Obama to IRS.

Yep, agree with you! I don't know why they're wasting time having a heated debate about it and not listen to a simple comment like me. :roll:

While I understand that the Government needs to crack down dissidents not paying what they owe to the IRS, I think it's ridiculous for IRS Agents to go after 4 cents that was not paid to the IRS and on top of that, to slap over $250 dollars in penalties for not paying 4 cents that was owed.

How much in tax payer's money was it for the Agents to gas up, make the drive to the place of business and their salaries put together in order to collect 4 cents plus penalties?

Overkill if you asked me.

To me it sounds like the IRS or the Agents had a bug up their butt with this owner. GENERALLY speaking, The IRS will not send agents out to a BUSINESS for less than $10,000 unless many letters have been ignored

Either this story is missing few crucial information or that it's a bogus one but since a news station reported in on this story by meeting with the owner of that business it could stand to reason that there may be some truth to it. I'm sure this story will somehow resolve itself one way or the other.

Huffington Post noted that as well. But of course since it's a liberal rag, you don't believe what Huffpo has to say. LOL!
 
I saw the Huffo piece.

Though do you know for a fact that it is NOT true? I'm just waiting it out to see how this story pans out. We all hear stories like how an errant check in a tax return that came with a few more extra zeros printed on it get cashed. Who knows. But do you know for a fact that this story cannot be the case?
 
The story is everywhere. I didn't doubt the story but the owner must have pissed someone off to get them to come for 4 cents. As for it being 4 cents perhaps the car wash owner misunderstood the letter. But it was still a very small amount. 4 cent debt would also be possible if the car wash owner mistakenly forgot to round up when making an estimate payment.

Right. The story is everywhere which is why I expect it'll be followed up rather quickly than later. Else it'd be the stuff of legends or Snopes.

the issue isn't whether or not if it's true. the main issue is.... were those 2 IRS agents under order by Obama to collect 4 cents?

The IRS falls under the Obama administration yet it is the secretary of Treasury that has full authority to administer and enforce the internal revenue laws and has the power to create an agency to enforce these laws. So, who is the boss of the secretary of Treasury?
