Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) - Once again President Obama has singled out Las Vegas, this time reminding Americans to avoid places like Vegas when they want to save money.

He made the comments during a speech in New Hampshire Tuesday.

"This isn't how responsible families do their budgets," he said. "When times are tough, you tighten your belts. You don't go buying a boat when you can barely pay your mortgage. You don't blow a bunch of cash in Vegas when you're trying to save for college."

The comments are similar to remarks he made last year when he said companies using government bailout money shouldn't hold conventions and meetings.

Nevada lawmakers and leaders were quick to critique Obama's latest remarks.

In a statement, Senator Harry Reid said, "That while the President is correct that people saving for college need to be fiscally responsible, the President needs to lay off Las Vegas and stop making it the poster child for where people shouldn't be spending their money."

By late afternoon President Obama responded to Reid's remarks. He sent the following short note to Senator Reid:

"I hope you know that during my Town Hall today, I wasn't saying anything negative about Las Vegas. I was making the simple point that families use vacation dollars, not college tuition money, to have fun. There is no place better to have fun than Vegas, one of our country's great destinations. I have always enjoyed my visits, look forward to visiting in a few weeks, and hope folks will visit in record numbers this year."

But other lawmakers were initially angry and frustrated.

Senator John Ensign released this statement Tuesday afternoon:

"President Obama has become quite comfortable criticizing Las Vegas," said Ensign. "Unfortunately, I think that he has failed to grasp the weight that his words carry."

Governor Jim Gibbons is also sounding off. In a statement he said, "I am stunned that this President is so thoughtless and so heartless when he says these things....Doesn't President Obama know that thousands of families in Las Vegas are suffering because of his failed economic policies?"

The city's biggest cheerleader, Mayor Oscar Goodman, had harsh words for the president:

"He didn't learn his lesson the first time, but when he hurt our economy by his ill conceived rhetoric, we didn't think it would happen again.

Now that it has I want to assure you, when he comes I'll do everything I can to give him the boot back to Washington and to visit his failures back there.

I gotta tell you this, everybody says I shouldn't say it, but I gotta tell you the way it is. This president is a real slow learner."

I lived in Vegas, bought condo for 90K and sold it for 250K in JUST four years so frankly, I think LV people there are stupid. :)

I absolutely HATE Las Vegas. The worst residence ever.

I smell a rat....Wag the dog time......Totally staged.

Reid is getting smoked in the polls. Has virtually no chance at re-election. This is a Hail Mary to to make Reid look like he is supporting the state's biggest city. Maybe this is the new way Obama is going to campaign for Democrats since ACTUALLY campaigning for them isn't working. The ol' good cop bad cop routine. Amazing how Obama comes out looking good in the end too. :laugh2::laugh2::laugh2::laugh2:

I would like to respond to what they said, "Governor Jim Gibbons is also sounding off. Oh, LV is hurt by Obama's remark? Hello? I lived there. It was crashing and is number one in foreclosures BEFORE Obama took over. And you think, considering that I sold my 90K for 240K (in just 4 years!) that I Should be sorry for them? No. You deserve it. You're stupid. You made it happen. You overspeculated... I profited greatly from your stupidity.

I will NEVER support Vegas. As long as there's gambling with so many people on welfare blowing all their income on gambling, prostitution, overspeculation, and addiction, I am going to bash LV because it deserves it!

If you want save money then don't go to Las Vegas.

Las Vegas is all about gambling and really nothing to do, except for great adventure in high desert area.

Las Vegas is place that where is hard to find job for deaf people, that what I was heard.

LV gamble can hurt people who struggle with the budget!

Why does you care about Reid since you are from Texas.

Your post does sound like sarcasm.

Two words: Personal responsibility. :D

It takes two to tango!

LV promotes that irresponsibility by saying, "What happens here stays here."

If you're in an environment where gambling is NOT offered, no gambling problem would happen. So, it starts with LV promoting gambling.

Yes, it's possible to gamble responsibly. I do gamble responsibly. I only spend when I CAN AFFORD to lose, not gamble all my assets away.

But considering how so many lives were devastated by gambling, I would rather just ban gambling for the sake of the public. It's NOT fair but it's much worse for those with gambling addictions - they are imprisoned by their own addiction.

My two words still stand, tangoeing has nothing to do with it. :D

sounds good, netrox. for the sake of public and this country (if I can) - I will impose emergency Martial Law and suspend U.S. Constitution. I will raid White House & Congress and place them under arrest for corruption, bribery, perjury and many more. Many lives are devastated by our politicians and greed. They are imprisoned by their own poverty. It's not fair for everybody especially lower and middle classes to suffer at the whim of the rich & powerful.

you with me?

I love love love Vegas as a vacation destination but if I am broke and struggling, I definitely wouldnt go there. Before, I would save to go there yearly (before I had kids) so I never got myself into debt or trouble by going to Vegas. Like someone said..it is all about personal responsibility.

However, Obama really shouldnt target Vegas because NYC, New Orleans, LA, and other places are also places where people can get themselves into financial trouble from spending and spending.

No, he shouldn't and he hasn't heard the last of it yet, although he tried to make amends.

Las Vegas is obviously one of the most expensive places in the country so...really, how does that help you save money when it's all about drugs, gambling, sex and violence? It's practically sin city.

I care about Reid because he is a US senator and his vote counts the same as either of my Senators. I don't like the way he votes so I hope he is replaced.
