Another dumb move or suggestion by the govt to bail out troubled newspapers business. Reading Waxman's comments he betrays his own thinking that he's doing this to assert better control over the media.

The solution to the problem is to make the corporations let go of the community newspapers and put them back in the local residents' hands. Community newspapers shouldn't be called community newspapers if they aren't owned by the communities they are in.

If you were to look at the newspapers today and compare them to the 80s and 90s, you will see quite a significant difference in news contents, advertisements, etc and their owners.

Do you realize that a large number and I mean a large number of community newspapers were bought out in the 90s and 2000s by media corporations as a way to make even more money. As a result, they lost money.

Why? Because they forced them to put in more associated press news stories and focus less on the local stories. What it also means is that they fired a good number of local journalists and columnists in favour of national journalists and columnists. That means less local coverage and less focus on the local communities. Therefore, less people are interested in reading the community papers when they can just read about it in a big city or national paper. They put the same content in a lot of newspapers they own nowadays. For instance, food recipes, movie reviews, health, lifestyles, etc. You will find that a lot of newspapers have exactly the same layout, design, contents, etc. That's because they use ready-to-go PDF pages for people to use since they are forced to in order to save money.

Like I said, force the corporations to give them up and put them back in local residents' hands since they cannot manage to make a dime out of them. The local residents can run it and probably a better job at it as well.
