HERNANDO COUNTY (Bay News 9) -- A cat came to the rescue of its owner who was getting attacked by a fox.

Debra Smith, who lives at the Hidden Vally Campground in Brooksville, was relaxing on her chair-swing Monday night when she saw a fox.

"This thing came up and looked at me and I stood up and it just started attacking, grabbing," she said. "With its claws and teeth hanging out and all that stuff."

Smith says she couldn't knock it off. She says her cat came out of nowhere and chased the fox off.

"I was terrified," she said. "By the time I called 911 my heart was about to beat out of my chest."
More Information

The fox bit Smith on her leg and foot. Smith says she is being treated for rabies, just in case. The fox took off into the woods after the attack.

Fox attacks aren't new at the campground. About a month ago, two people were attacked by a fox with rabies and two other people were attacked by the same fox nearby.

"We need something done," Smith said. "There are just too many people getting hurt."

Hernando County Animal Control says they will set up traps to see if they can catch the fox.

In the meantime, Smith is ready to protect herself.

"When I come out I'm going to have this," Smith said as she was holding a large stick. "So, I should be ok."

'Scaredy-fox' chased away by owner's cat - Bay News 9

WOW! That is some cat!!

That was pretty lucky. One of our cats disappeared years ago in a neighborhood that is infested with foxes.

WHere I am now we only have raccoon, opossum, and deer. Although we did see a Western Coyote walking along the side of the interstate in daytime about a year ago.

I may not familiar with FOX.. In Long Island, there were lots of red foxes. They did not bother us before. But i dont know much about foxes. so i am not aware that foxes would attack people.

lucky owners' cat protected her.

Foxes usually do not attack people. But Rabid foxes do.

Foxes in general don't attack human beings or family pets. But these with rabies can be quite dangerous.

Yeah. Foxes are having hard time to find food because of too many new developments.

My town had 40 big farms 30 years ago. Now, two big farms left now.
I never seen a deer in my town for seven years. Darn it. Maybe that cat shoo off her territory.
