Responsible Journalism?

Interesting! I never knew about Helen Thomas until now. I took the liberty of googling up on her biography and never knew she hails from Kentucky! :D

The interesting thing is; According to this biography; It states that She is the first woman to close the Presidential News Conference with the traditional "Thank You, Mr. President."

i shall read about Helen Thomas

but don't forget Micheal Moore and John Pilger they are worth reading about too. I have a book by John Pilger sent to me directly from UK. Its a rare book.

I knew she had covered the Kennedy election but it never dawned on me that she was that old. Guess that I'm slow. :hmm: She's doing great for her age. I hope that I hold up that well.

I'm a Michael Moore fan, too. I haven't watched Sicko, though, because it's too depressing.

only reason why i havent watch Sicko (me too havent seen it) is that its not subtitled!, i refuse to go back to my young days when subtitles was non-existent and that i had to 'assume' or make up stories in my own head to fill in whats i thought hearing people were saying. alot of Dvd's (if not all) have subtitles what a revolution!, but at same time im embitterred abotu my school days , i must have embarrassed the fuck out of myself so many times and not know it!! in front of all my 'hearing mates', scary when you really think about it.
but yup i can just imagine whats Sicko might be about, with the background of sociology then in terms of an insight, I am not surprised at all about corruption of the 'supposed' health systems which becoming more about control and money, that itself its very scary.
but yeah if anyone can point out where i could source a subtitled version of it, i'm game I'd want to know ALL about it, all the contents, all the exactly whats they saying about it. A freind of mine, (and quite a close one at that) is a Doctor (PhD), and Senior lecturer in many things sociology, often discuss strange and eerie things with me, ( i helped her to turn her dog/and overcome her fears of human as she was a lab-testing animal!!).
There is one dvd is like to add to your attention, "Our Daily bread" no dialougne and very disturbing as we get to discover what's the hell we've been eating and little do we know wwe actually contribute to this humans slaying over animals and nature!, so in a way im not that surprised with earth's backlash on the human race.......

Sicko is closed captioned but the one I saw was with SDH so that helped me a lot.

I don't blame you at all Grummer, I prefer my movies subtitled as well than assume what they are saying.

I found Sicko with subtitles on Subscene- you need to download both programs. The subtitles will appear when the movie starts.

I encourage you to watch Sicko because you will be stunned about the health care system in USA.

I second you about Sicko. Although I am not a big fan of Michael Moore, I hae found his movie Sicko quite interesting and eye-popping. Only the drawback about his film is he did not expose flaws in Canadian and UK health care system.

I wished Moore covered other health care system flaws rather than just focusing only on USA and Mexico as well. If he was going to focus on two countries, he may as well cover other countries.

Grummer, thank you so much for the link as I've bookmarked it for future reference as I know I will be using it for college references. Thanks once again!

Helen Thomas is still rocking the White House. Bush the younger would never call on Helen and even made her move to the back of the press corp area. With the new administration, her place and status are restored. Helen's still asking the hard questions and the questions that the President doesn't want to answer. Go Helen!

Helen Thomas participated with Stephen Colbert in the Press Corp dinner when Bush was still in office. If you missed it, check out the transcript and it's worth watching footage just to see the look on Bush's face.

She must be in her 80s now. I think she's an awesome jouralist.

I will have to watch sicko. I remember watching Michael Moore's Roger and Me years ago.

how about this definition of responsible journalism?

Mediascape - What is responsible journalism?

what do you say about this approach? a clever rationalisation at hand?

Thanks for the link. It was a good read.

I think with responsible journalism; it covers all areas rather than being one sided and also to relay the message without being able to illustrate a picture to kind of overturn the audience to form a decision rather than making such so-called judgment.

he did. He went to England. and it wasn't Mexico. It was Cuba. But yea you're right... he should try to talk about the flaws in those system that he visited rather than praising it and saying "if they can do it, so can USA"

Oh speaking of Michael Moore -

Didn't he once cover/direct Fahrenheit 911? I recall that it was a controversial piece.

I'm living Sicko. Found out that I was uninsurable about 3 years ago. I had to get a policy through my state which I only have because family members are helping me pay the high premium. I'm in the risk pool with the cancer survivors and schizophrenics. I don't have any of those conditions. My heart is healthy. My sin is a preexisting condition. I'm lucky that I have family help or I would be out of luck.

yeah, even following such guidelines as in this link, doesnt mean we can rule out possibility of the medium materials be used for persuasion.

Thanks for the clarification, appreciate it very much.

I agree with you about the "looking inside/outside of the box" philosophy.

Moore actually had b@lls using Ron Reagan Jr's eulogy during his father's funeral for his movie.

As Ron Reagan said pointedly in a eulogy to his father that Reagan never "[wore] his faith on his sleeve to gain political advantage."

Nobody was, is, or safe from Michael Moore even General Motors!

Moore has his own site and there's another counteractive site attacking him, oh what a great example of responsible journalism. :aw:

Moore is a con man and a leech.

Moore said in reference to Sicko and I quote: "all the world’s health care organizations have confirmed that if there is one thing that they do right in Cuba, it’s health care. And there is very little debate about that."

Little debate? No debate? All settled? A consensus? Hmmm, a familiar line there.

The Cuba that Moore won't show you. The health care Moore talks about is available only to a small elite around the regime. It's a communist country, what'd you expect?
