This is truly hilarious!

"President Obama poked fun today at people who want the government to stay out of Medicare.

"I got a letter the other day from a woman. She said, 'I don't want government-run health care. I don't want socialized medicine. And don't touch my Medicare,'" Obama said at an AARP-hosted town hall on health care. The crowd laughed.

"I wanted to say, you know, that's what Medicare is: a government-run health care plan that people are very happy with," Obama said, smiling, as he made the case for a public option to compete with private insurance plans."

Hmmm, sounds like Obama admits that this is all about socialized medicine. Figures.

British Health Care -
Chsel - they turn down smokers because smokers are deliberately destroying their health and why should they then use up the government's money for their treatment. They can pay privately.

You don't pay separate taxes for the NHS. You pay your taxes, full stop. And the Government just makes use of the money thats in the pot to provide all its services. Its not a question of paying higher taxes for an NHS but of the Government making the best use of the funds that it has. American wastes so much money on foreign wars it could fund an NHS with that!!!

And our taxes are nowhere near as high as Americans seem to think they are!

great answers by Americans against socialized healthcare -
I guess your right, you would be dead if it wasn't for the NHS. That's of course unless you smoke, because there's been cases where they turned down smokers. Hmm. I guess their tax money just isn't good enough.

But let me ask you this, if I choose a private healthcare system, can I no longer pay taxes for the socialized healthcare system or will I be forced to pay for both?

Respond: That's fantasitic. Smokers are forced to pay for your healthcare plan but are not allowed healthcare. It goes to show how much Socialists value freedom. So much for it being free huh. You just proved my point.

I've said it once and I'll say it again. If you force an individual to pay for something but that individual is not allowed access to what they paid for, then your stealing their money. So screw your socialist healthcare system.

Oh yeah as for it being the governments money, IT NOT THE GOVT'S MONEY, ITS THE PEOPLES MONEY. The govt takes it from them.

Don't go pointing me out when it comes to foriegn spending on war, I agree with you on that issue and want the troops home. I'm not conservative I'm libertarian.

Sage: American healthcare is the most privatized. ROTFLMAO. Our govt is all over our healthcare, that's the reason for the high healthcare cost in the first place. The FDA regulates our drugs to the point that they have become extremely expansive. Look at the drugs that we can get over the counter and the one's that are regulated. They are so expensive that the poor can't afford the drugs they need. Not only that but you have to get a doctors perscription in order to get those drugs. That means a doctors bill. You could end up paying over $75 on that one bottle of medication, when you could of got it for the same price as the ones over the counter.
I agree that are healthcare system is over priced and its in a bad shape, but by no means will I endorse a Socialized Healthcare System like the UKs. Where when they state that everyone is fully covered, is obviously not the case.

We Americans don't huh ?

So just what would you call medicaid and medicare then, if not socialized medicine ?

Since almost everyone over 62 years old, is on medicare, just how can you say Americans don't know what socialized medicine is?

The biggest problem, with universal health care in America,

Is those who advocate it, simply refuse to tell anyone just how they would fund such a system.

They speak in platitudes, about how America spends more per person than any other country.

But they refuse to give any facts or specifics on

how much it would cost,
just how they would get funding for it,
who would control it,
who would make the decisions about what is covered
Who would decide medical salarys
who decides where care is offered

When they can answer those questions, then i'll listen to them.

You are absolutely right. I am Scottish but live in the USA now. I have used medical services all my life. The profit element is what kills US healthcare. Let me explain this simply.

The British worker earning average wage pays one third less in healthcare taxes than the US worker earning average wage pays in taxes and insurance. Throw in the employer's share (which is usually over half of the cost) and you have a terrifying number. The issue is not so much "Can the USA afford universal healthcare?" Rather, it is "How much longer can the USA afford privatized medicine?"

My friend I think we're right to be proud of our NHS. It's a great instititution. There are some downsides though and I don't just mean the ever increasing costs of the NHS. There is a problem with it in principle too. If the state takes responsibility for curing you then it feels that it has a legitimate right to refuse to treat you if you smoke, eat the wrong things, drink too much etc. I've heard that argument used and I find it sinister.
I think we should be looking for a proper balance between a totally nationalised health service and private provision - like they do in parts of Europe such as Holland.

So, your question is? Oh... no question. Just a rant.

We should all bow to the Queen of Socialized Medicine so that she does not get angry with us, and we don't loose out on our health care!

God Save The Queen!

There is a saying here in America: "There is no such thing as a free lunch."

Thank you, but really, why do you care? We can take care of our own.

Part of the problem with health are here is the overbuilding of hospitals and clinics. We pay for all of the extra vacant rooms. My son was on a pediatric wing that had only 2 patients (him and one other child). The vacant space and staffing for the larger ward runs up the price. How many pediatric wards can one city need? We have several hospitals a short distance from where I live.

Doctors buy machines to perform diagnostic procedures and increase profits. It's great for the manufacturer of the machines but we all end up paying for those extra machines. Duplication and waste.

Europeans Know Nothing about American Healthcare
1. we already have government-funded health plan and it's called Medicaid and Medicare
2. the American way is "we take care of our own" and it's your money - a concept that is foreign to Europeans
3. I do not support socialized healthcare other than Medicaid/Medicare/Social Security. I do not believe in the concept of paying big tax to help all because it promotes laziness and abuse.

Yes we know the cost of our health care system is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ and it's continuing to rise to eye-popping price. All we have to do is do something about the cost and we're good. Obama is working on that but one thing that I do not want him to do - expanding & promoting government-funded health care that is encroaching private health sectors (but OK if it's to create price competition that drives down the cost of private care)
