Ok..

My daughter is getting ready to enter the Seventh grade.

She is having a fit since she has to update her immunization shots. I told her I made an appointment for her. She just starts bawling.

She hates needles. How can I calm her down and help her to overcome her fears.

Oh boy....I've gone thru that 3 times, but I have 3 boys (not girls)...and believe it, they "acted" brave...but it took 1 of my boys a long time before he would allow the shot! And I'm glad I'm done with it.

As for ur daughter, girls would be harder. I can only suggest talking to a friend whose daughter has already had the shot and see if that might help? If not, the only thing else I would know to do is to say that you know how she feels, but it has to be done or she can't enroll in 7th grade. Maybe even a beforehand talk with ur doctor or clinic might help to soothe her.

Funny thing is. She was never afraid of needles before. Which surprised me by how she acted.

It ticked me off at first. Then I realized, it may be something she genuinely fear.

I will talk to her more. She knows it has to be done. So I figured the sooner it is done, the less dread she has to deal with.

hopefully she gets over it...

at age 5, I was horrified of needles. scared the crap out of me. one day needed to go to the doctor to get a Penicillin shot. Mom stayed in the office area while I went into the exam room. my doctor gave me a speech about being "a big brave boy, and big brave boys are not affraid of needles"... so he gets my courage up. I drop my pants to get the needle in my butt. The doctor says "this isn't gonna hurt one bit". he pulls out this GIANT needle (not sure if it was a display needle or something a zoologist injects into an elephant). the thing was HUGE! the syringe part was over 18 inches long and the needle was like another 6 inches long.

Seeing this thing I let out a scream and bolted out of his office with my pants and briefs around my ankles....

Doc was laughing.... I fled in horror

luckly my aunt was in the parking lot or I would have continued running half thru the streets of Newark....

so my pants up and aunt brings me into the office. my mom was shocked i told her what happened. she goes in to see the doctor.

Doc says "he was so scared of the needle he ran out screaming" and he shows her a normal size needle...

the bum lied about the whole thing

got over my fear of needles at age 8

 Are you sure the needle was actually that size? Fear tends to make people exaggerate. You seen a needle at first glance... perhaps you thought it was twice as big at first. Since you were alone and scared.

Perhaps your Aunt brought you to your senses.

Dentists will usually prescribe an anti anxiety pill that can be picked up at a pharmacy and taken before you go in for terrified patients.

Maybe your doctor would be willing to do something like that on a one time basis just so she could get the shots with less trauma?

oh he is dead. he died in '96

yeah it was that big. 16 years later, in October 91, I lived in Pennsylvania and need a doctor. I had just punched out a local doctor and had to find a new one. suffering from extreme pain in my right ear. desperate and needed a doctor. so went to visit my childhood doctor in NJ. the guy from the story. while visiting his Whippany office I saw the giant needle on display. he started joking about it...

oh and the pain in my right ear i was suffering from was caused by a spider crawling into my ear. the spider crawled in while I slept. in the morning when i put the hearing aid in my ear the spider bit into the ear cannal by my eardrum....

LOL i can picture you doing that. Poor you.

spider? that must be painful. I tend to put my hair cover my ear. I know my ears are plenty of room for bugs to climb into.

OMG!..I've had multiple surgeries on my ears and the ear canal (or opening to my ears) are twice or three times bigger than normal ears.....It takes double ear plugs in each ear to shower....and usually, )haha) I do put cotton in my ears before going to bed......I "dreamed" one time a bug crawled into my ear which freaked me out!......Well, I'm gonna have a full bag of cotton balls, super size, right on my night stand before going to sleep now!....Thks for the warning.

The spider.....damn, that was horrible!!

:giggle: :naughty: What about the other open cavaties?....Oh well....cotton balls for my ears and nose....duct tape for my mouth, arse and my vagina.....Oh Lord...trying to get that duct tape off so I can use the bathroom is gonna be terrible! :laugh2:

BAHAHAHAHAH this thread is hilarious! Ask your daughters dr if he/she can prescribe emla cream ..u put it on and a bandage at the site of the needle an hr b4 the needle(u have to ask b4 hand where it will be) and it numbs the area so u dont feel it...i am terrified of needles ..i was so anxious about my IV having to be put in that i didnt even care about the stuff they wud do to me during sugery lol just the IV freaked me out...im alot more brave about it...i just have to lie down or i faint lol

Holy Moly!

Im 22 and I still hate needles. The last time I had a shot was before I got my CI. This nurse poured over several droplets of clear liquid over the side of my arm and it felt cold and numb. When she inserted the needle I didn't feel anything. Maybe this kind of thing would help her overcome the needle fear.

Remember, as long as the eyes see the needle and the mind knows where it's going, the arms will clench tightly in self-defense and once the needle goes in, it's really painful as the muscles are strongly binded together, making the needle struggle to go through. If she's relaxed, it'll help a great deal.

It can't be any worse than a needle pit from Saw II....

I understand...

Now.. If I try to explain that to her... The more nervous she is, the more she will be tense.. and the more it will hurt. Would that help?? I think it would freak her out more.

I don't have any psychological or medical advice to give per say, but I can give my experience with this.

I used to be afraid of needles as a kid. I would wince at the doctor.
But really early on I started doing acupuncture. I had probably been punctured everywhere except the private area. Some on the side of my head, and some on my arms, and feet. Probably had no more than 10-20 at one time maximum. That totally destroyed any fear of needles after that.

I guess mostly what it is, is experience for me.

When the doctor give me the shots, I usually nearly fainted, but I just have to be patiently accept if have to.

I tend to tell the doctor that I am sensitive to the needle, they will try their best to comfortable me while giving me the shots.
