Hey Naisho or soneome,

My five-year old Sony Viao notebook's performance is very slow. Vitual memory is low.

I am considering replacing my laptop with a new one.
The one I have now is specced with a 1.60Ghz Pentium M CPU and 504 MB of RAM

The new one I am looking at is specced with a Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 Ghz or more CPU.

Do you think that I could replace new processor into old notebook? Performance is faster than old Premium M? should install 2 GHz or more memory (RAM) chips?

Core 2 Duo beat Pentium M by miles and you need more than 2 GB RAM if you run XP or 3 GB RAM for Vista (32 bit) or 4 GB RAM for Vista 64 bit.

What do you do with your laptop? 504 memory is low for today's standard, you probably want to get 1-2GB.

But depending on what you do, you might not need a new C2D Laptop unless you are running apps that need cpu juice. Could be as cheap as adding 2gb ram to your laptop to solve your problems if you use only older programs, that would cost less than $100, more like around ~$50.

If you run newer programs and software, then yeah you will probably want to get a new laptop.

I use this chart to measure differences in speed between cpu's on the max performance, you should try it out to get an idea on the "differences".

Notebookcheck: Mobile Processors - Benchmarklist

Your CPU looks like it's Rank #169.

Your CPU and RAM are fine for office app. Your laptop need re-format and re-install. Replace the new laptop is waste of the money if you use it for office software only.

I sold my old Acer 1.6ghz Intel M with 512MB RAM to my dad and he used it a lot and run very smooth for business. I assumed you put too much start-up software that cause slow down.

Do not buy a computer with Vista.

Stay with XP. Vista will decrease your performance more than more powerful HARDware (typo correction) can improve it. Vista will also cause huge aggravation.

Options:

EDIT: New Comment: I see now that you can only upgrade to 1 gb memory. that may be enough. With average use, XP does well with 1 gb and will still far outperform Vista. Your 512 mb limitation is likely causing a good part of your problem.

If 1 gb turns out insufficient, then try the netbook option below.

You can probably put 2 gb memory and a 250 gb hard drive into the computer you have. You should be able to get these parts at Best Buy for under $200 and put them in yourself. Best Buy should be able to look up your computer model and find the parts you need --- probably an IDE drive and an older kind of laptop memory.

MemTurbo will help you manage your cache and this and some other utilities can help you optimize XP so that it will way outperform newer models with vista.

The other option is to buy a "Netbook" like an Asus or Dell or MSI Wind with a mechanical HD. These come with XP and a processor comparable to yours. However, many come with only 1 gb memory and a 120 or 160 HD. You can upgrade the memory and HD on these and you should be able to get a SATA HD of 320 mb and 7200 rpm for this kind of machine. Be sure you buy one with a 2.5" HD. If it has a 1.8, it will be MUCH more difficult to upgrade.

There are many things you can do to improve XP and it has taken me years to learn them, so I can't list them all here, but what I described is a good start.

Also, note well that XP, properly optimized, will not use anywhere near 2 gb memory, no matter what you do with it, and will still way outperform Vista.

Good luck!

I have done both of these and they work very well.

You need upgrade the RAM to 1 GB, it should work so fine for XP with office apps.

Upgrading Processor to Pentuim Duo X2 core, it depends if your laptop's pin matches the newer processor. You have to be sure it can use same socket for it. My laptop, Acer Aspire with AMD Turion 64 processor can be upgraded to AMD Turion X2 Processor. I believe it's actually a 939 pins, I may be wrong. Dual core is nice to increase performance.

About Memory, if it's upgradeable up to 1Gb max. It maybe a little issue but u can get by.
It's just the BIOS limitation.

No, processor isn't upgradable on most notebook because of soldered to motherboard and Chevy's notebook wouldn't be upgradable due soldered to motherboard.

If so then still not upgradable because Pentium M use Socket 479 since Pentium D require Socket P.

You are right, Foxrac. That s not worth to install this updated processor but will add updated memory chip. I have new HP notebook now. I dislike Vista to wait for ipdated Windows 7 on December or January. I will plan to buy Dell desktop which have Vista downgrade to XP Pro. I wait to listen that getting free updated Windows 7 after purchasing PC. Thank you for explaining, Naisho and Foxrac.

I believe that Windows 7 will work so flawlessly with Pentium M but need more RAM, that all but haven't find anything about test on notebook with 1 GB RAM.

I agree that most Laptop processors are not upgradeable. It's rare to find laptop with socket that allows upgrades.

If you want notebook to have CPU upgradable then get Gateway FX.

I can't get updated Vista dowload software into my old notebook because they require 2 GB RAM memory or more. Similiar to Windows 7. right?

Vista required 1 GB as minimum RAM, same goes with Windows 7.

I hate Gateway to my gut. I will check my Acer to see if its processor is upgradeable. I thought I saw tan colored socket under the heatsink when I took it apart. I will double check to see if it ACTUALLY have it. If so then I would be happy guy to try out Turon 64 X2
